Among Americans, the groups at high risk include those of African or Hispanic, and others with a family history of disease. Older people of African descent are five times more likely to develop glaucoma and 14 to 17 times more likely to lose their sight, even the Elderly European origin. Those of any ethnicity who have a family history of disease are four to nine times more sensitive.is a silent disease, many people have no symptoms at the beginning and not realize that their peripheral vision diminishes or blind spots occur. The disease affects more than 2.3 million Americans 40 years of age. Another 2 million are unaware that they have the disease. If untreated, glaucoma leads to blindness final.

Since glaucoma is a leading cause of preventable blindness, glaucoma, and the American Society of Glaucoma Research Foundation are joining the Academy and EyeCare America in urging Americans to know their risk of disease.

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve from the eye that carries the images we see in the brain. As glaucoma worsens, cells die in the retina, a special light-sensitive region of the eye, reducing the ability of the optic nerve to transmit visual information to the brain. In the most common form of the disease, primary open-angle glaucoma, usually restricts peripheral vision, then other white spots occur in the visual field. Symptoms of the less common form, but the disease more intensely dangerous, narrow-angle glaucoma, including blurred vision, severe eye pain and headache, rainbow-colored halos around lights, and nausea and vomiting.

For people with symptoms or at risk of eye diseases like glaucoma, the Academy recommends that they see their ophthalmologist to determine how frequently their eyes should be examined. Academy recommends that people without symptoms or risk factors for eye disease get a baseline screening at age 40 when the signs of the disease and change in vision may start to occur.
