AED Program Expanded to Campus Store, University Center | Big ...

With the opening of the University Center at Pottstown Campus in fall 2012, the College obtained and placed a new Philips Heartstart FRX Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in late August in the main lobby area of the building.

In addition, a new Philips Heartstart FRX AED was recently placed in the Campus Store in Blue Bell on December 21.? According to Grace Spena, Director of Health & Wellness Initiatives, this new AED can be used to assist an individual having a life-threatening heart emergency known as ventricular fibrillation.? This particular unit has the capability of being used for those ages eight and older, as well as those under eight years of age or weighing less than 55 pounds. Spena stated that the technology of these life-saving devices continues to be enhanced, making the newer units much easier to use with clear voice guided instructions from the moment you turn the unit on.

Spena was pleased to note that the Campus Store AED was funded through monies collected during On-Campus Seasonal Flu Vaccine Clinics sponsored by Health & Wellness during fall 2012. Employees and students, who took advantage of the getting the flu vaccine on campus, can take pride in knowing that they may contribute to helping save a life one day.

A training session was held by Spena for the Campus Store staff members on December 21 to review the use and operation of the AED unit, as well as when to activate the College?s internal emergency system through 6666 and local EMS through 9-1-1.

Having ?AEDs located in the Campus Store and the University Center will enable first responders to initiate use of the device in a timely manner, while local emergency personnel are in route.

Spena noted that in 1999, the College was proactive in initiating the placement of AEDs at both campuses. According to Spena, many colleges and universities did not see the need for such units on their campuses at that time.? However, she commented this thinking has changed significantly over the years and that you would be hard pressed to find a college or university that does not have ?AEDs on campus now.

The College?s AED Program has expanded over the years based on its growth from building expansion, increased student population and programs, as well as increased use of campus facilities. Two AEDs were previously donated for the Physical Education Center and the Blue Bell Campus Public Safety vehicle by Mr. & Mrs. Kahn. ?Additional AEDs were funded and placed as new buildings were completed (Advanced Technology Center and Fine Arts Center at the Blue Bell Campus and North Hall at the Pottstown Campus), as well as an AED was purchased to support our athletic program. Earlier models of the AED, for use on adults only, were re-deployed to the East House and Facilities Management Building in May 2012.

• College Hall ? First Floor on wall outside Piano Lounge; Second Floor on pillar across from Student Success Center
• Parkhouse Hall ? First Floor on wall near Information Booth
• Advanced Technology Center ? First Floor on wall across from elevator
• Science Center ? Second Floor on wall near small Auditorium 214
• Fine Arts Center ? First Floor on wall next to elevator
• Campus Store ? on wall near Cashier Desk
• Physical Education Center ? First Floor on wall across from Sports Equipment Room
• Child Care Center ? on wall behind receptionist desk
• AED for Sports and Athletic events is located with athletic trainer during these activities
• East House ? on wall to right of main entrance
• Facilities Management Building ? on hallway wall outside Carpenter?s Shop
• Public Safety Vehicle

Pottstown Campus:

• South Hall ? First Floor on wall between Public Safety Office and Bookstore
• North Hall ? First Floor on wall at main entrance
• University Center ? First Floor behind Receptionist Desk
• Public Safety Vehicle

AED units are routinely checked by Public Safety and Spena to make sure all units are functional and have up to date supplies of AED batteries and pads.

Spena was also pleased to note, in addition to Public Safety Officers who are certified in CPR and the use of an AED, there have been eighty-eight (88) employees certified through the College?s Employee CPR/AED Training program since its inception in March 2009. While many faculty and students in the Health Career programs, along with the Director of Health & Wellness Initiatives, maintain current Healthcare Provider CPR/AED certification as a requirement of their professional roles, having more non-healthcare providers certified on campus can better support the College?s ability to respond to life-threatening medical emergencies in a timely manner.
