Wonder won't sing in Fla. after Zimmerman verdict

(AP) ? Stevie Wonder says he won't perform in Florida and other states with a "stand your ground" law.

In a video posted on YouTube, the 63-year-old singer said at a concert in Quebec City, Canada, on Sunday "that until the 'stand your ground' law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again."

Wonder added: "Wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world."

The "stand your ground" law allows people to use deadly force if they believe their life is in danger.

George Zimmerman shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin during a February 2012 confrontation in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman said he fired his gun in self-defense.

A six-member jury acquitted Zimmerman of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges on Saturday.

Wonder's representative said the singer had no further comment.

No. 16 3M Ford Fusion Debuts Sustainable Fire Suppression Fluid On Earth Day

No. 16 3M Ford Fusion Debuts Sustainable Fire Suppression Fluid On Earth Day
ST. PAUL, Minn. (PRWEB) April 18, 2012

When you are behind the wheel traveling at 200-miles-per-hour, safety is critical. It is the one thing, beyond winning, that NASCAR driver Greg Biffle considers when he climbs into his No. 16 3M Ford Fusion. Protection from fires is an ongoing concern among drivers. For this Earth Day weekend at the Kansas Speedway, Biffles car has been upgraded with the environmentally sustainable, 3M Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid. Novec 1230 fluid balances performance requirements with favorable environmental and safety properties, giving Biffle added reassurance and peace of mind.

Im proud to drive the first racecar that incorporates a sustainable fire suppression fluid. It seems fitting to go the first round on Earth Day, said Biffle. Im lucky to be working with Roush Fenway Racing who jumped on board early to get the new fluid into the car to not only protect me, but also the environment. The sustainability aspect of Novec is huge. I expect a fire suppression fluid to keep me safe, but the fact that it also is safe for the environment is important to me.

Biffle went on to say that he is not surprised that a technologically driven brand like NASCAR has approved a fire suppression fluid from 3M, a company known for innovation. Metalcraft, Inc., an international leader in fire suppression, equipped both the cockpit and fuel cell area of the No. 16 3M Ford Fusion with its new Fire-Trak branded fire suppression system using Novec 1230 fluid. The Fire-Trak system and 3Ms Novec 1230 fluid received NASCAR approval earlier this year. 3M researchers developed Novec brand products to be a safe, sustainable chemistry used to replace ozone-depleting substances being phased out under the Montreal Protocol or those chemistries that have high global warming potentials and undesirable toxicity. Novec 1230 fluid has an exceptional environmental profile with zero ozone depletion potential and a global warming potential of one. It stays in the atmosphere only five days, compared to HFC-236fa that lingers for 240 years.

Novec 1230 fluid is safe now and into the foreseeable future, unlike HFCs that could be impacted by the desire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in fire suppression, said Joe Ziemba, marketing manager at 3M. Were proud that the No. 16 3M Ford Fusion is putting 3M technology to work to help it keep racing toward a bright future.

Novec 1230 fluid is a chemical agent that is stored as a liquid but is discharged as a gas that leaves no residue. The fluid does not damage sensitive electronics or equipment in the racecar and provides a wide margin of safety when deployed in an enclosed area near Biffle. It also does not affect the surface of the racetrack, keeping it safe for other drivers. Novec 1230 fluid comes with 3Ms Blue SkySM warranty, important when used in commercial buildings, where it offers an opportunity to earn innovation credits toward Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

Other notable applications of 3M Novec 1230 fluid include use in protecting high-value assets such as museum artifacts, library documents, data centers, health care facilities, computers and other critical devices where water cannot be used. Additionally, Novec 1230 fluid has found its way into the archives at the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library at the Alamo.

The Novec brand line also includes Novec Engineered Fluids used in electronics cleaning and heat transfer. In fact, Iceotope, a company that patented liquid cooling for servers in its data center, selected Novec technology to rapidly convect heat away from electronics for 24/7 free cooling. Novec technology is also being used in a preservation application at the Smithsonians National Museum of Natural History where it is safely preserving a 330-pound, 24-foot giant squid.

Novec branded products are consistent with 3Ms longstanding commitment to sustainable development, for the eighth consecutive year, 3M received the ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy for its comprehensive worldwide energy conservation efforts. The Dow Jones Sustainability Index continues to recognize 3M as a sustainability leader by including the company in its 2010-2011 global sustainability index. When 3M first introduced Novec technology in 1997, the American Chemical Society recognized the companys scientists with a Heroes of Chemistry Award.

Create a financial plan to meet your goals in the next 5 years - Debt ...

Creating your own five-year financial plan can mean a lot of different things for you and your future. Each person has individual financial goals that they set for themselves, but often times these are set well into the future or in the immediate coming months. If you want to change things around for yourself within the next five years, then you have to have a plan set in place in order to make it really happen.

Even if you don't know where to get started, there are steps you can take towards setting small goals that make a big impact on where you are in the next five years. This is the perfect amount of time because it's not so far into your future that you will be retiring, but it could be long enough to allow you to accomplish a lot of different things. So, if you get started now you will be one step towards securing your financial future which is becoming more and more important in todays world.

1. Assess Your Current Finances

Too many people are unrealistic about their finances at any point in time. If you aren't completely aware of what is going on with your money right now, then you need to take an assessment. Take into account what your monthly expenses are, how much you make and what you are saving. You should also take into account how much debts you have and how long you have to pay them off.

Although looking at your current expenses is important, you should also look at long-term expenses. This means keeping an eye on investments and loans that you will have to pay off over the next five years. Opening your eyes to these things is important and will keep you aware of what is going on with your money.

2. Make Your Goals

After you've seen what your financial situation is like, you will need to start setting those goals! Start with some things that you want to change about your finances. This could be that you want to pay off your student loans, but it could also be something like wanting to save a certain amount of money. Remember that you need to be specific with the goals that you set so you will know when you reach them. Specific goals will also motivate you more than those that are vague.

If you are having a difficult time figuring out where you should be in the next five years, then go and meet with a financial planner. They will be able to provide you with a lot of specific advice about your particular situation and what you can benefit from the most. Their expertise is going to help you out a lot and will really make a difference with the goals that you set, so take the time to meet with them!

Tip: Don't make your financial goals unreasonable, or else you could end up not meeting them. Set realistic expectations for yourself and what you know you can accomplish, even if it's hard work.

3. Get Life Insurance

The last step to take is to get life insurance for yourself and your family. This will protect your finances in the event that you or your spouse passes away. This is a cushion that is important to have, as you never know what will happen and you always want your family to be well taken care of.

Your goals are yours alone and your financial plan does not have to mirror one that someone else has. Remember to keep your best interests in mind when creating your plan and to meet with a professional if you need some help.

Reid calls GOP threats on filibuster rules changes "silly;" showdown may come Tuesday

WASHINGTON ? Sen. Harry Reid on Monday dismissed Republican threats to open Yucca Mountain for nuclear waste if he changes Senate filibuster rules, saying he doubted they would follow through on them.

Majority leader Reid described GOP efforts to link a fight over Senate rules to the controversial Nevada project as ?silly,? and part of a ?sky is falling? strategy to head off a showdown on the filibuster that could come as soon as tomorrow.

?That bothered me about as much as the color of your tie today ... which doesn?t bother me at all,? Reid told a reporter who asked about Yucca Mountain during his presentation at the Center for American Progress.

In a speech at the progressive policy think tank, Reid sounded determined to force change that would prevent Republicans from blocking President Barack Obama?s nominees for Cabinet posts and top federal agency jobs that require Senate confirmation.

By a maneuver on the Senate floor nicknamed the ?nuclear option,? Reid wants to change the body?s rules with just a 51-vote majority, rather than the two-thirds vote usually necessary to amend Senate rules.

Once in place, executive branch nominations could be passed by a simple majority vote, rather than the 60 votes required to stop a filibuster. Reid has charged Republicans with obstructing the Senate?s business and preventing Obama from assembling a second-term team.

Republicans say Reid and Obama want them to ?sit down and shut up? when it comes to high-level appointments. If Reid changes the filibuster rules for executive branch nominations, they have said the rules could further be changed to prevent filibusters on judicial nominations and legislation

If or when Republicans gain control of the Senate, several have said they would pass Yucca Mountain bills with a 51-vote majority -- a smack at Reid, the Nevada senator who has used his leadership position to prevent nuclear waste bills from advancing.

Still, there remain deep pockets of support for the nuclear waste program that Obama, at Reid?s urging, canceled soon after he became president.

In several test votes last week, the House supported reviving the program by votes better than three-to-one. In the Senate, Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., has said there are at least 51 votes in favor of it.

But Reid said today that while there is support for changing filibuster rules on nominations, there is little if any support for broader change ?if (Republicans) are in power or anyone else is in power.

?If they want to change the rules ... more power to them. I think they would rue the day they did it. They are not going to do that. We are not going to do that.?

Reid has called for votes Tuesday on seven Obama nominees whose appointments have been stalled. He indicated he would deploy the ?nuclear option? unless Republicans agree to pass all seven.

Officials: Blast hits northern Iraqi city; 19 dead

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A bomb struck a crowded coffee shop late Friday in the ethnically disputed northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, killing at least 19 and wounding more than two dozen in the latest in a string of bloody attacks pounding Iraq since the start of the holy month of Ramadan this week.

Iraq is being rocked by its deadliest and most sustained wave of bloodshed in half a decade. More than 2,600 people have been killed since the start of April, raising fears that the country is once again edging toward the brink of civil war a decade after Saddam Hussein was toppled in the U.S.-led invasion.

The blast exploded in the Classico Cafe in southern Kirkuk, 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad, as patrons were enjoying tea and water pipes hours after the sunset meal that breaks the daylong Ramadan fast, police said.

Kirkuk is home to a mix of Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen ? all with competing claims to the oil-rich area. The Kurds want to incorporate it into their self-ruled region in Iraq's north, but Arabs and Turkomen are opposed. Sunni Arab extremists, aiming to exacerbate ethnic tensions in the region, are believed to be behind frequent attacks in the area that pose a challenge to Iraq's Shiite-dominated government.

In addition to those killed, the attack wounded 26, a police officer and a hospital official said. It brought to 24 the number of people killed in attacks in the country on Friday.

Hours before the Kirkuk attack, Sunni cleric Salah al-Nuaimi urged calm among Iraqis during a joint Sunni-Shiite sermon Friday in Baghdad aimed at easing sectarian tensions.

"Enough is enough," al-Nuaimi told worshippers at a Baghdad mosque. "We all love Iraq, we are all Iraqis and we want to be united. We want to stop the bloodletting, and develop and build Iraq."

Earlier in the day, a suicide car bomber struck a police patrol outside the northern city of Mosul, killing four policemen, a police officer and a medical official said. Mosul is 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of the Iraqi capital.

And outside the northern city of Tikrit, 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Baghdad, drive-by shooters armed with pistols fitted with silencers killed a senior police officer. The attack took place in the town Shirqat, a police officer said.

Officials also provided details of new attacks on Iraqi Shiites late the previous night.

In one of the attacks on Shiites, a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden motorcycle into a funeral tent for a Shiite family in the town of in Muqdadiyah, about 90 kilometers (60 miles) north of Baghdad, officials said. The late Thursday evening explosion killed 13 people and wounded 24, the officials said.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to journalists.

In the northern town of Dujail, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Baghdad, a parked car bomb went off outside a Shiite mosque late on Thursday. As people gathered around the blast site, another bomb went off. That twin bombing killed at least 11 people and wounded 25, mayor Nayif al-Khazrachi said. Two medical officials, who weren't authorized to speak publicly, confirmed the casualty figures.

The two attacks raised the overall death toll Thursday from a series of attacks, which included assaults on police stations in the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah west of Baghdad, to 40.

On Wednesday, gunmen launched an assault on an army checkpoint and special oil industry police assigned to protect a nearby pipeline in the western Iraqi desert, killing at least 14 troops there.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the latest attacks but al-Qaida's Iraq branch, which has been gaining strength in recent months, frequently targets Shiites, security forces and civil servants in an effort to undermine the Shiite-led government in Baghdad.

Galaxy preview: L.A. faces Portland tonight

GALAXY vs. PORTLAND

Kickoff: 8 p.m. today, Jen-Weld Field, Portland

TV/Radio: NBC Sports Network/1150-, 1330-AM

Matchup: While Landon Donovan continues to reach milestones with the U.S. national team, the Galaxy (9-7-3) look like they're starting to gain some serious traction in MLS play. Outside of Donovan, they have their full complement of starters, and rookie Gyasi Zardes is beginning to lurk as a serious scoring threat alongside Robbie Keane. ... Keane is on fire. He has the fourth-most goals in MLS (seven) and leads the league in assists with eight. ... Hector Jimenez has made two consecutive starts in Donovan's place and has scored two goals in the past three games. ... Goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini hasn't had to face many shots this season, but he has seven shutouts and a 1.12 goals-against average into the match. ... Portland (7-2-9) has allowed only 17 goals in 18 games, including a 0-0 tie with the Galaxy on June 19. The Timbers, tied with the Galaxy for third place in the Western Conference standings, have won two games in a row only once this season. Their 1-0 loss to Columbus Sunday ended a 15-game unbeaten streak. ... Timbers defender Pa Modou Kah, ejected in the 11th minute of that game after picking up two yellow cards, will serve a one-game suspension.

Army says its helicopters buzzed Washington city

PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) ? The Army says it's responsible for the low-flying military helicopters with spotlights that buzzed around the small town of Port Angeles, Wash., late Thursday. An Army official is apologizing for the unannounced training mission.

Dozens of residents called police to ask what was going on. Mayor Cherie Kidd said Friday the choppers, in her words, "terrorized my city."

The mayor says no one had advance warning, and city officials spent hours Friday trying to determine where the helicopters came from ? or, as she put it, "who had invaded Port Angeles."

The Peninsula Daily News reports (http://is.gd/LDLhv2 ) Army Col. H. Charles "Chuck" Hodges Jr. termed the episode "totally unacceptable" and added his apology. In his words, "At the very least we should have notified local authorities of the exercise."

Hodges says he has launched an investigation.

Iverson Talks NBA Summer League

ORLANDO, FL -

The battle to make the Boston Celtics roster is on for NBA draft pick and Yankton-native Colton Iverson. The 7-footer has played four Summer League games so far with the team in Orlando and in limited minutes is giving his best effort. With one more game to go, he's averaging 3-point-3 points per game to go along with 5-point-3 rebounds.

With the NBA Summer League in full swing, the race is on to impress coaches and build chemistry with teammates. For Colton Iverson, he plans to accomplish both the same way he always has, with hard work.

"When I'm out on the floor I'm just trying to do as much as I can, play as hard as I can. You're not always going to get the most minutes and everything. Just go out there and rebound, play defense and do whatever you can do to help the team win," Iverson said.

Iverson has started two games in Orlando and while he enjoys getting to know his fellow Celtics, there's one player he really enjoys.

"Definitely Kelly Olynyk. He's a great player and I think we play really well together. We're the same size but we're two different positions. He's more of a 4-man, face up shooter. He's a lot of fun to play with because he takes all of the attention on defense," Iverson said.

Olynyk was Boston's first round pick this season. He, like Iverson and the rest of the Celtics organization for that matter, are getting better acquainted with the team's new head coach. Brad Stevens was hired last week. While he's making the transition from college to the pro game, Iverson has a lot of faith in his new leader.

"He came down to Orlando. I went up to his hotel room. We had a little 20-minute meeting and I'm very excited for the opportunity to play for him. He's a great coach obviously. Took a Butler team to back-to-back National Championship games. That's pretty impressive. I know he's a genius when it comes to the game of basketball. So I'm very excited for the opportunity to play for him," Iverson said.

The Celtics final Summer League game in Orlando is scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. Central Time.

Pitchfork Media Launches The Dissolve, A Movie Site Looking To Break Out Of The Online Hype Cycle

the dissolve logoPitchfork Media, the company behind the music site that all my cool friends used to read (I use the past tense because, like me, my friends have gotten old and uncool), just launched a new property ? The Dissolve, a site that's all about movies. When I loaded up The Dissolve earlier today, my first feeling was one of familiarity. That's usually not something you want in a new property, but in this case, it was good thing ? I was happy to see the bylines of several writers I used to read at one of my favorite arts and entertainment sites, The A.V. Club. The Dissolve was founded by Keith Phipps, who previously edited The A.V. Club, its editor Scott Tobias was film editor at The A.V. Frank Del Rio Details New Regent Ship - Travel Agent

July 11, 2013 By: Susan Young

?

?

On Thursday, Prestige Cruise Holdings (www.prestigecruiseholdings.com) ordered a new $450 million, 738-guest luxury ship from Italy?s Fincantieri shipyard. The new 54,000-ton Seven Seas Explorer will become Regent Seven Seas? first new ship since Seven Seas Voyager launched in 2003.

Putting it in perspective, ?the business just calls for us,? Frank Del Rio, Prestige?s chairman and CEO, told Travel Agent and Luxury Travel Advisor Thursday night. ?It?s the perfect time for Regent Seven Seas Cruises to order a new ship.? In a one-on-one interview, Del Rio spoke at length about the new ship. He called from Alaska where he?s sailing onboard Regatta for an Oceania Cruises 10th Anniversary sailing.

Travel advisors and industry leaders were brimming with excitement. ?Yes, we definitely need some new product for the luxury cruiser,? emphasized Ruth Turpin, owner, Cruises Etc., a Virtuoso agency in Dallas, TX. ?I think the biggest benefit is having another ?true? luxury ship?this gives us another 700 or so beds in the marketplace.?

Roger Block, president of Travel Leaders Franchise Group, said: ?We believe this is a fantastic development that shows a firm commitment by Apollo that they?re seeing strong success with the Regent brand. By committing the financial resources to enhance the already exceptional customer experience, they?re also giving agents a phenomenal new product to sell.??

Recently inducted into CLIA?s Hall of Fame, industry veteran Michelle Fee, co-founder and CEO of Cruise Planners, said she?s always excited in hearing about a new ship. ?It brings positive media exposure to our industry. It?s a great story and customers ?love? the new ships.?

From another perspective, ?Prestige Cruise Holdings is a well-respected leader in the luxury market and has proven with the Oceania brand that they have a great deal of expertise in the design of new ships that the consumer will be attracted to,? said Dwain Wall, senior vice president and general manager, CruiseOne and Cruises Inc.

Wall views the order as ?an excellent sign of the long-term commitment that Prestige has to the Regent brand.? He also said it shows the strength in the luxury cruise market.

Here?s Del Rio?s perspective on the new ship, the evolution of Regent, its onboard product and what?s ahead.

A Competitive Marketplace

Turpin considers Crystal Cruises and Silversea Cruises as the prime competitors for Regent Seven Seas in what she terms the ?true luxury? category. Crystal Cruises (www.crystalcruises.com) sails the world with two luxury ships; Crystal Serenity, its newest, launched a decade ago. Silversea Cruises? (www.silverseacruises.com) last major ship debut was Silver Spirit in 2009, although it?s adding a new small expedition ship, Silver Galapagos, this fall.

Seabourn Cruise Line has also added capacity over the past few years, and a new Viking Ocean Lines is expected to enter the upscale segment with a new small oceangoing vessel in 2016.

Among the main competitors cited by Turpin, Regent is the only line with a new ship order. Why? Del Rio said growth within the luxury segment is typically ?more lumpy? than for the mass-market brands. ?Luxury lines are more careful than large contemporary lines to add new capacity,? he said.

?It is a big step.? Del Rio said, citing a ?different dynamic.? Regent?s brand is where it needs to be right now to take this step, Del Rio stressed. All-inclusive Regent has the highest luxury per diem in the industry.

When lines launch new ships and add berths, analysts often wonder if pricing will suffer. Seven Seas Explorer will represent a 40 percent increase in Regent?s capacity.

But Del Rio puts that in perspective: ?Anytime a relatively small cruise line grows, on a percentage basis, [the capacity growth] is a huge number.?

What's more important to remember, he said, is that ?our ships are sailing full right now.? His philosophy is that Regent's new ship reflects the consumer demand for the brand.

When Seabourn launched the third of three new ships in 2011, it subsequently sold its three older, smaller ships to Windstar Cruises. So, the natural question is whether adding a new ship might mean Regent would consider dropping its oldest, smallest ship from the fleet.

From Del Rio?s perspective, the whole point of the new ship order is to spread the line?s luxury footprint, to give it more capacity, not less. He said Seven Seas Navigator has the highest occupancy of any ship in the fleet. ?Guests love her and she?s a money maker,? Del Rio said.?

Bottom line: Agents shouldn?t expect the addition of a new ship to mean the exit of an older ship from the fleet.

About the New Ship

Seven Seas Explorer?will have similar -- yet slightly larger -- capacity as compared with Regent?s Seven Seas Voyager and Seas Seas Mariner. Silversea and Seabourn operate smaller ships, while Crystal is known for its larger luxury vessels. ??

?The 700-guest range works well for us,? said Del Rio ?Guests love that type of vessel. It works well with the itineraries, it works well with all-inclusive. We don?t want to change the winning formula.?

In its earlier press announcement Thursday, the line said the ship?s upscale ? yet timely ? design will feature ?extreme use of exotic stones and polished woods, designer furniture, rich fabrics and sophisticated lighting combined with what promises to be a museum-quality, eclectic art collection will clearly position Seven Seas Explorer as the new standard in luxury cruising.?

In the past, Del Rio has taken a very hands-on approach to the design, architectural features and artwork of his firm?s vessels ? most notably Oceania?s Marina and Riviera. Will he be as involved this time? Will he pick out the artwork?

?My guess is that the architects and designers will hate me by the time we get to the end of the process,? he quips. ?I have to be very, very involved.?

Architectural and interior design firms Tillberg Design AB, RTKL Associates and ICrave are designing the vessel. Calling the Seven Seas Explorer, ?the most luxurious cruise ship ever built,? Del Rio said. ?It?s not an empty claim?Explorer?s aim is to obliterate [the current standard of] luxury? and elevate it.

Del Rio cited such elements as quality of towels, bedding, china and crystal, but also said the high quality will extend to guest-to-crew ratio and the design and space itself. He said the designers will assure that the materials, furniture, fabric and art will appeal to luxury cruisers and provide a very high-end quality experience.

In addition, ?the cuisine will be over the top,? Del Rio added. Will the line have any celebrity chef affiliations? ?I don?t see a need to add a celebrity chef,? he told us.??

Del Rio acknowledged Regent's past relationship with Le Cordon Bleu and that Jacques Pepin is very involved at Oceania. But overall, he believes Regent?s cuisine is top notch, so he doesn't see any celebrity chef involvement for the new ship.

Seven Seas Explorer will have six open-seating gourmet restaurants; Seven Seas Voyager and Seven Seas Mariner have five, and Seven Seas Navigator has four.

What restaurants will guests enjoy? ?You?ll see the same ones that are on Voyager and Mariner, such as Prime 7, Signatures, Compass Rose and so on, plus a third specialty Asian themed restaurant,? said Del Rio. The restaurant name is yet undetermined.

Seven Seas Explorer will have an all-suite, all-balcony concept, with 369 suites ranging 300 square feet to 1,500 square feet. ?The suites will just be incredible,? Del Rio believes. Specific touch points will be revealed down the line, but the 54,000-ton ship will have only 369 suites, which he says is a gleaning about what space guests can expect..

?Even if you do make the spa larger and the gym larger and the restaurants larger [plus add a new Asian dining venue], you have a lot of room,? he said. ?The suites will be very large and the bathrooms over the top.?

Another gleaning? Expect to see something unique with the balconies. ?A lot of ships have lots of balconies, but in many cases, they are so small you can barely sit a chair upright,? he said, noting ?these balconies are going to be special.?

Guests can also expect to see Regent?s signature nine-deck atrium, the two-story Explorer Theater, three boutiques and an expansive Canyon Ranch SpaClub, which will be larger than on other Regent ships.

A Global Fleet

Ordering a new ship is ?a very smart move,? said Turpin, noting it will allow them to have more destinations to offer.? ?We have a number of luxury clients who are looking for new destinations. Also hopefully, it will allow them to do a real Full World cruise again.? I know the demand is there.?

Clearly, 2016 is still too far out for the line to detail the new ship?s itineraries. ?Typically, when new ships are introduced, you introduce them in the best-selling itineraries,? said Del Rio. ?We did that with Oceania with Marina and Riviera and we?ll do the same with Seven Seas Explorer.

But he left the door open about what the bigger fleet might mean for the line?s ability to offer a World Cruise, noting that ?we won?t discount that,? particularly with a smaller ship.

Just as Insignia will operate Oceania?s first full World Cruise, a 180-day voyage in 2015, experts say Seven Seas Navigator might be a good fit for a full World Cruise at some point. ?Well, you never know,? Del Rio said.

We asked Del Rio, a proud Cuban-American, about the potential for Cuba port calls. He?s very enthusiastic about the potential but said it's really in control of the U.S. government, and given the current embargo and politics, "we?ll have to just wait and see."

But he admitted he?d love to plan a full circumnavigation of the island, and says: ?We along with every cruise line would love to be able to travel to Cuba, something no one have been able to do in the past 53 years.?

Wherever it sails, though, the new luxury ship will be powered by diesel-electric engines with a service speed of 20 knots. Seven Seas Explorer will be a ?green ship? employing the most advanced environmental systems and state-of-the-art technology.

The Luxury Marketplace

Regent had a record year last year, Del Rio said, noting it was the third year in a row, and the luxury brand expects another record performance this year with strong per diems.

?The all-inclusive message really resonates in the marketplace,? said Del Rio, noting it?s not just with luxury clients but also with premium cruisers wanting to move up and know what they?ll spend on their luxury cruise.

?When the economy was suffering, they went to their ?all-inclusive? model and it changed the luxury space,? acknowledged Fee.? Regent?s fares include all-suite accommodations, round-trip air, highly personalized service, acclaimed cuisine, fine wines and spirits, sightseeing excursions in every port, gratuities and a pre-cruise luxury hotel package for those staying in a concierge or above suite.

?So called ?nickeled and dimed? is alive and well at other lines, and getting worse,? Del Rio says, noting that Regent?s brand proposition is ?something unique in the marketplace and it?s the reason why the fleet is full.? Del Rio?s view is that others have onerously mimicked it, but not copied it.

As a brand, Regent attracts 85 percent North Americans; 80 percent are from the U.S., 5 percent from Canada, and the rest from the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand primarily. By the time the new ship launches, Del Rio projects those totals will be approximately 75 percent from the U.S., 5 percent from Canada and about 20 percent from those other European speaking countries.

Because Regent commands the highest per diems in the industry, it's not surprising that the brand attracts what Del Rio calls ?an affluent group.? Top clients to target demographically are those in their upper 50s and lower 60s in age.

From a psychographic standpoint, Del Rio said guests are often illustrious people in their own fields, such as top notch economists, major Fortune 500 leaders and others who typically are what he terms ?humble?don?t have to show off their wealth?and are low key in nature.??

It?s too early said Del Rio to describe how the brand will introduce the new ship to agents. ?But we did want to go out and name her early, so people can talk about who she?s going to be,? he said. While it?s one less ?reveal? there will be others he says, noting that the marketing folks are in the midst of the roll-out planning.

Many agents have known and worked with Mark Conroy, the line?s former president, and wonder if he?s involved in the ship planning. Yes, says Del Rio. ?Mark has already had a role in development of the plans,? Del Rio said, noting that Conroy, now a consultant to Prestige Cruise Holdings, has very much put his mark on what the new ship will become.

?And as we get closer to developing more and more of the details, he?ll be asked his opinion,? Del Rio said, noting that Conroy?s feelings and recommendations will be included as appropriate.

Overall, ?we?re very excited as new ships don?t come along often,? Del Rio emphasized. ?The reason we?re able to do it is travel agent support.? He cited the line's strong relationships with Virtuoso, Signature and others.

From one trade leader's perspective, ?the culture of paying close attention to details and to building strong relationships with the customers has created what I would say is one of the most loyal customer base in the industry,? said Wall. ?This loyalty will assure success for this new ship and Regent.?

Stay tuned for another robust story today providing perspective from industry leaders including John Lovell, president, Travel Leaders Leisure Group and Vacation.com; Alex Sharpe, chief operating officer, Signature Travel Network; and others.?

Biden says China cyber-theft must stop

By MATTHEW PENNINGTON
Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday that China's rise is good for the U.S. and the world but its theft of U.S intellectual property must stop, as the two global powers began annual talks to build cooperation and hash out their deep-seated differences.

The Strategic and Economic Dialogue is taking place a month after the U.S. and Chinese presidents held an unconventional summit at a California resort that aimed to set a positive tone in relations but also made plain Washington's growing anxiety about Chinese cyber-theft.

"We both will benefit from an open, secure, reliable Internet. Outright cyber-enabling theft that U.S. companies are experiencing now must be viewed as out of bounds and needs to stop," Biden said in his opening remarks at the State Department.

Heavyweight delegations from the two sides are also expected to discuss barriers to U.S. trade and investment in China, the nuclear program of China's ally North Korea, and a host of other strategic issues, including Iran and Syria's civil war. The first rounds of talks Wednesday were focusing on climate change and energy security.

Secretary of State John Kerry returned for the start of the dialogue from his wife's bedside in Boston, and issued tearful thanks for the outpouring of good wishes for his wife who remains hospitalized. He will return to Boston later Wednesday and will be replaced in the talks by his deputy William Burns, said State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

The Chinese side in the talks is led by Vice Premier Wang Yang and State Councilor Yang Jiechi, who declared U.S.-China relations had "reached a new starting point" after the June summit of new Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Barack Obama.

"China will stay committed to reform and opening up," Yang Jiechi said, adding that his nation was also committed to being a responsible player in the international system.

But he made only passing reference to cybersecurity as one of the "global challenges" that the U.S. and China should work together on. On other thorny topics, he said China was ready to discuss human rights with the U.S. and develop military relations that Biden stressed were important for avoiding the risk of confrontation between them in the Pacific.

Beijing has often bristled at Washington's criticism of its suppression of ethnic minorities and political dissent, and has also been reluctant to deepen military ties.

The strategic rivalry between the U.S. and China belies deep economic interdependence between them. The upbeat tone of the Obama and Xi summit went some way to ease mutual suspicion, but it was short on concrete outcomes.

Xi did express common cause with Obama in his opposition to North Korea's nuclear weapons program but that has yet to translate into effective pressure on Pyongyang. Biden said Wednesday the U.S. intends intensify cooperation with China "to denuclearize North Korea."

Another longtime Washington concern in its relations with China - the low value of China's currency and its impact on the skewed trade balance - has eased as the yuan has appreciated in value against the dollar. But the U.S. is still prodding Beijing to let the market dictate its exchange rate and expedite economic reforms.

Biden said China needs to free its exchange rate, shift to a consumption-led economy instead of relying on exports, and enforce intellectual property rights. He said the U.S. welcomes China's growth, but it should be based on international rules.

Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew also urged China to "follow through decisively" on its economic reform commitments, saying it will be critical to China's success and consequential for the wider world.

U.S. businesses and lawmakers want easing of barriers to American trade and investment, a roll back of subsidies for Chinese state-owned enterprises and make progress on negotiations for a bilateral investment treaty. For its part, China is concerned about security screening of its companies as they increasingly look to invest in the U.S.

The Center for Strategic International Studies think tank said the Chinese side will have little room to maneuver as the dialogue comes ahead of a meeting in October of the ruling party's central committee, where Xi's economic reform plans will be rolled out. Still, Beijing will likely want to show some incremental progress on Washington's trade and investment concerns, including protection of intellectual property.

There was no mention at the dialogue's opening of National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, whom the U.S. had wanted extradited from the semiautonomous Chinese territory of Hong Kong before he flew to Russia.

U.S. officials have said that China's failure to cooperate was damaging to its relationship with the U.S. but the case is not expected to overshadow the talks. Washington has been put on the defensive by Snowden's claims that the U.S. hacked targets in China, including the nation's cellphone companies and two universities.

Attending Ford?s Theater with the Lincoln?s: the tragic lives of Clara Harris and Henry Rathbone

Shooting

Most Americans are familiar with the?events of the Lincoln assassination. On the evening of April 14th, 1865 Mary Todd and Abraham Lincoln went to see My American Cousin at Ford?s Theater in Washington, D.C. During the play the actor John Wilkes Booth snuck into the Presidential Box and shot President Lincoln. However the details of the other couple in the Presidential Box that night,?Clara Harris and her fianc?e Henry Rathbone, have largely been forgotten. Unfortunately their tragic future was also determined by the horrors of that night.

Clara Harris was the daughter of Senator Ira Harris of New York. After Harris?s mother died, her father married Pauline Rathbone. Henry Rathbone and Clara Harris were step-brother and sister but still fell in love and eventually became engaged to be married. Henry joined the US Army after the outbreak of the Civil War and saw many bloody battles. ?He had hoped to come home from the war, marry his fianc?e, and move on with his life. Clara Harris had become friends with?the First Lady?through the Washington social scene. Others had been invited to Ford?s theater that night, including Julia and Ulysses S. Grant, but all had turned down the invitation.

Lincoln was reportedly enjoying the play until Act III when John Wilkes Booth came into the Presidential Box and suddenly shot?the President?in the back of the head. Startled, Henry stood up and wrestled with Booth, who stabbed him severely in the arm hurting him from shoulder to elbow. As Booth began his escape, Henry screamed ?Stop that man!? while Clara?yelled, ?The President is shot!? Seriously injured, Lincoln was moved to a house across the street from the theater and died the next morning with many in attendance, including Clara.

Lincoln's Death

The library at the New-York Historical Society has a letter that Clara Harris wrote to her friend Mary describing that frightful night. She describes Mrs. Lincoln seeing blood on Clara?s dress and screaming, ?oh! my husbands blood.? Only later would they learn that it was mostly Henry?s blood on Clara?s dress from his severe stab wound.

Harris letter

Letter dated April 25, 1865 from Clara Harris to her friend Mary describing the night of the assassination. She describes how Mrs. Lincoln saw Clara and exclaimed, ?oh! my husband?s blood, ? my dear husband?s blood- which it was not, though I did not know it at the time. The President?s wound did not bleed externally..? (AHMC Harris, Clara)

After the terrible night at Ford?s Theater, Clara Harris and Henry Rathbone married and had three children. However, Henry was never able to get over what happened at Ford?s Theater. He felt guilty for surviving the assassination and believed, as many had gossiped, that he should have done more to prevent the tragedy from happening. He felt he could never escape attention for being there that night and began to suffer from hallucinations and eventually declined into mental illness. On Christmas Eve in 1883 while living in Germany, he attacked his own family and himself.? Almost imitating the assassination of years before, he shot Clara and stabbed himself several times with a knife. ?Clara died from the attack, and Henry was declared insane. ?He was committed to?an asylum for the criminally insane in Germany and his children were sent to live with their uncle in the United States. Henry?died in 1911 and was buried?with Clara in a cemetery in Germany.

For many years, Clara kept her bloody dress from the night at Ford?s Theater in a closet in their family summer home in Albany. According to family lore, she had the closet walled up with bricks after believing that she saw Lincoln?s ghost. ?In 1910 their eldest son, Henry Riggs Rathbone, had the dress burned stating that it had been nothing but a curse on his family.

The story of the?couple?s life is mostly remembered through historic fiction.? Clara Harris?s?stained?dress was the subject Mary Raymond Shipman Andrews?s 1930 book The White Satin Dress.? The story of the ill fated couple is also told in Thomas Mallon?s 1995 book Henry and Clara.

Sony Xperia Z (T-Mobile)

Sure, the Apple iPhone 5?may have a gazillion apps, the Samsung Galaxy S 4?may have countless cool features, and the HTC One?may be built out of a block of aluminum, but one dip into the pool, one slip into the kitchen sink, or one drop into the toilet (gross) and they're history. So for some people, Sony's latest smartphone?for T-Mobile, the $99.99 Xperia Z, has the ultimate killer feature: water resistance. It also happens to be an all-around great phone, with a large, gorgeous display, fast performance, and a good camera? that you can use to record video underwater. It isn't quite as powerful as the HTC One or the Galaxy S 4, but if you've been known to keep a bag of rice around to revive waterlogged devices, the Sony Xperia Z may be just the phone for you.

Design
Next to the HTC One, the Xperia Z is one of the sleekest Android phones we've ever seen. Framed out by a polyamide skeleton, the Xperia Z is covered in scratch-resistant, tempered glass on all sides and protected by a shatterproof film. I wouldn't suggest dropping this phone on the ground and expecting it to be no worse for the wear, but it has a very solid feel in the hand. It measures 5.47 by 2.79 by 0.31 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.15 ounces, which makes it just slightly larger than the Galaxy S 4, but it also feels a lot more premium. And while this isn't a good phone if you've got small hands, it is a nice, manageable size considering the large 5-inch screen.

In addition to the striking, primarily glass design, the Xperia Z meets military specifications IP55 and IP57. That means the phone is dust resistant and submersible in up to three feet of water for up to 30 minutes. For this to work, you need to make sure that all of the external ports are properly sealed, but the phone is programmed by default to let you know when they aren't (you can turn these popup notifications off if you wish to live dangerously). We tested the Xperia Z's water resistance by submerging it in a pitcher filled with water for 30 minutes at a time, and never once did it falter. In fact, you can even turn on the video camera and film underwater, which I'll discuss in more detail later.

First let's talk about the display. The Xperia Z's 5-inch, 1080p screen is powered by Sony's Mobile Bravia 2 engine, and it looks fantastic. Every inch of the display is comprised of 443 pixels, which makes text, images, and video all look remarkably sharp. Compared with the Galaxy S 4, the Xperia Z looks more crisp, while colors on the GS 4 are more saturated. Which display looks better is really a matter of preference, but my vote is for the Xperia. Still, the HTC One bests them both, though it's a little smaller, at 4.7 inches.

The Xperia Z has a notification light in the upper right corner, a la BlackBerry. A flashing blue light, for instance, means you have a new message or a missed call. This is a useful feature I'm surprised hasn't made its way to more phones yet.

Your two physical controls can be found on the right side of the phone. There's Sony's trademark aluminum Power button in the middle, and a volume rocker right below. There's also a tiny cutout for the phone's speaker at the bottom, which I found a little too easy to inadvertently cover with my hand. There's a covered 3.5mm headphone jack on the top right edge, covered microSD and power ports on the left, and a covered SIM card port on the right. It took me a minute to find the power port the first time around because it blends into the phone's design so seamlessly. I reviewed the all-black model, but T-Mobile is also offering it up in a rather striking shade of purple.

The phone's sleek unibody design means the 2,330mAh battery is sealed inside. Sony includes a suite of power management software, which this phone definitely needs. Without any power-saving tools turned on, the Xperia Z lasted for 7 hours and 47 minutes of talk time, which is okay, but a few hours short of the Galaxy S 4.

Network and Call Quality
The Xperia Z supports both HSPA+ 42 and LTE on T-Mobile's network. If you pay the $579.99 to buy the phone outright, you can also use it on low-cost carriers like Simple Mobile, which also uses T-Mobile's network. It also supports 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, as well as Wi-Fi calling.

T-Mobile is in the midst of expanding its LTE coverage and plans to cover 200 million by the end of the year. We've seen LTE signals pop up in New York City from time to time, but it wasn't available when I tested the Xperia Z, so my tests were conducted over HSPA+ 42. The thing is, even T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 network is still very good. I saw average speeds of 12Mbps down and 2Mbps up, which is an excellent fallback if you aren't covered by LTE.

Reception was average, and unfortunately, call quality is lacking. Voices sound harsh in the earpiece, with lots of fuzz in the background, and the phone itself vibrates at top volume. Calls made with it can be somewhat hard to hear as noise reduction is poor. The speakerphone sounds okay, but it isn't loud enough to hear outdoors. The phone had no trouble pairing with a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset and standard Android voice dialing worked fine.

T-Mobile's new contract-free plans start at $50 per month, and that gets you all the talk and texts you want, along with 500MB of high-speed data per month, after which your speeds are slowed to 2G. $60 gets you 2GB of high-speed data, and $70 gets you unlimited high-speed data. These are excellent rates compared with competitors like AT&T and Verizon.

Android and Apps
The Xperia Z is powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor. On the one hand, that makes it one of the fastest smartphones you can get. But on the other, that processor is a whole generation behind the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chip in the HTC One or the Galaxy S 4. Don't get me wrong?the Xperia Z will remain a solid performer for some time to come, but this isn't cutting-edge technology. The Xperia Z performed admirably in our benchmark tests, but cannot match the scores set by those faster devices. Still, performance feels smooth across the board, and you won't have trouble running any of the 800,000+ apps in the Google Play store, including graphically intensive games.

Robotic Ultrasound Helps Identify Tumors During Kidney Cancer Surgery

Novel Technology Makes Breast Cancer Surgery More Precise

The researchers compared the robotic ultrasound probe (not pictured) to the same procedure using a laparoscopic ultrasound probe that requires an assistant to guide the probe for the surgeon. (Photo : UC Irvine Health)

A robotic ultrasound may be able to help identify tumors during kidney cancer surgery, according to researchers at Henry Ford Hospital.

Kidney surgeons who perform the ultrasound robotically have direct control over the painstaking procedure instead of having to rely on an assistant for part of the task, which can be difficult and possibly dangerous.

The researchers compared the robotic ultrasound probe to the same procedure using a laparoscopic ultrasound probe that requires an assistant to guide the probe for the surgeon. At the end of the study, the researchers compared both of the two methods to determine which would provide the best results.

Like Us on Facebook

Besides giving the surgeon autonomy, the robotic ultrasound probe is more easily manipulated than the laparoscopic probe when measuring the tumor from certain angles," said Craig Rogers, M.D., a urologist at Henry Ford Hospital's Vattikuti Urology Institute and senior author of the study, according to a press release. "This can reduce the need to move the kidney to gain better position.

"While our study showed comparable results from both methods of mapping and measuring kidney cancers, the robotic ultrasound probe enables the precision of a robotic instrument as well as direct surgeon control."

The surgical procedure that the scientists studied was known as robotic partial nephrectomy, or RPN. This entailed the removal of a diseased part of a cancerous kidney by a surgeon-controlled robot instead of the traditional open surgery that is usually performed when the surgery is completed.

Seventy-five consecutive RPN procedures were completed using a laparoscopic ultrasound probe and 75 consecutive RPNs were completed using a robotic ultrasound.

"Both groups had similar tumor characteristics, operating times and other factors, and their outcomes were similar," Rogers said, via the release. "There was no statistically significant difference in measured variables between groups when controlling for tumor size and complexity. So the robotically controlled ultrasound probe performed on-par with traditional ultrasound, but with the added benefit of direct surgeon control and precision."

Researchers found that the patients in both study groups were cancer-free during follow up examinations at a mean of 25.7 months for the laparoscopic group and 10.2 months for the robotic group.

"We helped pioneer both the development and utilization of this robotic ultrasound probe right here at Henry Ford Hospital" Rogers said. "This is another advance in technology to help us with minimally invasive cancer surgery."

More information regarding the study can be found in the?Journal of Endourology.?

Apple and Samsung Brace Themselves for Chinese Competition, Lenovo and Huawai Set to Take Over Smartphone Industry

China has been penetrating markets here and there quite successfully. In the previous year, the country managed to join the competition giving competitors a run for their money. The global phone industry has shifted - Apple and Samsung are no longer just the players.

Previously, smartphones were targeted to a high-end market. Only the affluent or rich can afford to buy the device. These days, there are emerging markets offering companies lots of opportunities. Different types of smartphones have also emerged forcing players like Apple and Samsung to diversify products to cater to different consumer groups.

The diversifying needs and emerging markets are the two primary factors that will affect the growth of smartphone sales in the future. Major Chinese tech manufacturers like Lenovo, Huawi, Oppo, Coolpad, Xioami and ZTE are taking advantage of this. It is only a matter of time before these players put out their series of products challenging features of the bigger market shareholders.

Although Samsung remains the top selling vendor of phones in China, earning 20 percent of the market shares for Q1 2013, Chinese companies are poised to overtake according to Canalys. They have already gone past Apple. The company has around 8 percent of the smartphone market in China.

Players like Huawei and Lenovo have been successful in switching gears and expanding their services and products. Lenovo has improved their position after releasing the ThinkPad laptops. The firm expressed venture into the smartphones industry in no time.

"There's a long tail of local competitors that are going to push Apple and Samsung harder and harder," Neil Mawston , analyst from Strategy Analytics, explained.

Many phone consumers in China are particular about the price because network operators do not usually subsidize the phones in the country. Unlike in Europe in United States where the subsidies cover for a certain sum masking the actual amount people pay for their phones. They have the technology? US government briefly shows iOS on a Lumia 920 (updated)
