Nexus 4 coming to O2 UK next month

Android CentralBritish mobile network O2 is the first UK carrier to confirm that it'll be offering the LG Nexus 4 when it arrives next month. O2 doesn't offer any specific release date on its "coming soon" page, but with the Nexus 4 arriving on the Play Store on Nov. 13, we expect an O2 launch around the same time.

O2 also isn't confirming reports that it'll have a one-month exclusivity period in the UK, however the silence from other British operators suggests this may well be the case.

Also absent is any hint of pricing -- again, the Nexus 4 is to be offered SIM-free from £239 via Google Play, so if O2 wants to lure customers into a two-year contract, it'll likely have to offer the phone for free.

We'll be bringing you even more Nexus 4 coverage in the days ahead, so keep it locked to Android Central.

2012 Legacy Breakfast Recognizes Advocacy Efforts of Families Living with Developmental Disabilities

All About Developmental Disabilities (AADD) honored the Pease family of Buckhead at its 2012 Legacy Breakfast. The award was presented at the organization?s 2012 Legacy Breakfast, held Oct. 11 at the Atlanta History Center. More than 300 attended the event, which raised money to support services, advocacy and training for families living with developmental disabilities.

?So many of those who attend the Legacy Breakfast have a personal connection to developmental disabilities, be it a child, a sibling, or a relative,? said Bari Love, co-chair of the event. ?The money raised at this year?s event will help hundreds of families in Georgia better support their loved ones with services to integrate them better into their communities.?

Buckhead?s Pease Family Honored with Legacy Award

Janis and Richard Pease?s son Kyle was born with cerebral palsy. They began physical therapy when he was just five months old, combining their work with Kyle with lifelong advocacy efforts to help him realize his dreams.?

  • Janis co-founded Challenger Little League at Buckhead Baseball and she volunteers with the Fulton County Department of Family and Children Services in their alternative court system, where she hears cases and advocates for families.?
  • Richard has spent twelve years on the Board of the Fulton County Commission on Disability Affairs, where he also served as Chair of the Board.?
  • Both Janis and Richard are involved with the Georgia Advocacy Office and Lekotek.

Kyle has been as active as his parents in advocating for people with developmental disabilities, by his actions and his example.

  • During his undergraduate career at Kennesaw State University, Kyle was an active member for ABLE, KSU?s student disability organization, where he coordinated many of the group?s events.?
  • He has also excelled in the Sports Management field. He maintained a 3.0 class average and designed disability-friendly sports facilities.
  • Kyle loves sports and plays soccer and baseball.? In 2011, he achieved one of his athletic goals when he crossed the finish line of his first triathlon with his brothers, Brent and Evan.?

Exercise Study Finds Too Much of a Good Thing Tied to Poor Mental Health

Exercise Study Finds Too Much of a Good Thing Tied to Poor Mental HealthResearchers have found that those who exercise 2.5 to 7.5 hours per week have better mental health than average. However, more than that is associated with poorer mental health.

For the study, researchers analyzed data reported by over 7,600 adults who took part in a U.S. national survey and compared the participants? mental health to quantity of exercise.

The researchers say that it is the first study to show an association between too much exercise and poor mental health.

?The largest mental health differences occurred with two to four hours of exercise per week,? wrote Yeon Soo Kim, M.D., and colleagues at Teachers College, Columbia University.

?Beyond four hours, the trend begins to reverse. About 65 percent of those with poorer mental health exercised more than four hours per week, compared to 55 percent of adults in better mental health.?

The researchers were surprised to discover that when 7.5 hours of exercise were exceeded each week, symptoms of depression and anxiety rose significantly. This was the case in both men and women, and in people of all ages and different levels of health.

However, further research is needed to determine whether people who are more prone toward depression or anxiety are simply more likely to engage in extensive physical activity as a way to keep their mental symptoms under control, or whether larger amounts of exercise may actually cause symptoms of depression and anxiety.

The researchers also add that their findings support ?the notion that regular activity may lead to prevention of mental health disorders.?

?If physical activity can prevent mental health disorders or improve overall mental health, the public health impact of promoting physical activity could be enormous,? the researchers said in the study.

Although the study found an association between large amounts of exercise and worse mental health, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

The study is published in the journal Preventive Medicine.

As the first bullet suggests make sure the person living on the land actually owns it. This can be found in the public records. From there you can approach the owner or ask a real estate agent if they are willing to approach the owner on your behalf.

Obama on storm: If they say evacuate, do it now

(AP) ? President Barack Obama delivered a sober warning to millions in the path of Hurricane Sandy on Monday, declaring that even though food, water and generators have been moved into position, "this is going to be a difficult storm" with long-term power and transportation outages possible.

In a direct appeal to those who live in harm's way, the president said, "Please listen to what your state and local officials are saying. When they tell you to evacuate, you need to evacuate. Don't delay, don't pause, don't question the instructions that are being given because this is a powerful storm."

The president made his remarks in the White House briefing room eight days before the Nov. 6 election, and a few hours after he canceled a campaign appearance in Florida to return to Washington. He turned aside a question about the storm's impact on the campaign, saying safety was his top priority.

The huge storm posed a threat to an estimated 50 million people and some of the nation's most densely populated areas. Even before a nighttime projected landfall along the mid-Atlantic Coast, dire warnings of winds, rain and storm surges prompted officials to close mass transit systems in New York, Boston and Washington, as well as Connecticut's highways. The federal bureaucracy in Washington also was shuttered.

Obama said he had spoken with the governors of all the states likely to be affected, and he added there had been "extraordinarily close coordination" among various levels of government.

Yet he stressed repeatedly the dangers posed by the slow-moving storm, and said its effects would not dissipate quickly.

"The public should anticipate that there are going to be a lot of power outages," he said.

He added, "Transportation is going to be tied up for a long time. ... We anticipate that there are going to be a lot of trees down, a lot of water."

The president said, "We're making sure that food and water and emergency generation are available for communities" that need them.

Striking one upbeat note, he said that at difficult times like the current one, "we all pull together. We look out for our friends, we look out for our neighbors and we set aside whatever issues we may have otherwise to make sure that we respond appropriately and with swiftness, and that's exactly what I anticipate is going to happen here."

Obama had been scheduled to make a campaign appearance in Florida before flying back to the nation's capital, but he scrapped those plans in favor of an immediate, bumpy flight aboard Air Force One.

Exercise boosts satisfaction with life, researchers find

Saturday, October 27, 2012

Had a bad day? Extending your normal exercise routine by a few minutes may be the solution, according to Penn State researchers, who found that people's satisfaction with life was higher on days when they exercised more than usual.

"We found that people's satisfaction with life was directly impacted by their daily physical activity," said Jaclyn Maher, graduate student in kinesiology. "The findings reinforce the idea that physical activity is a health behavior with important consequences for daily well-being and should be considered when developing national policies to enhance satisfaction with life."

The team examined the influence of physical activity on satisfaction with life among emerging adults ages 18 to 25 years because this population's sense of well-being appears to worsen more quickly than at any other time during adulthood.

"Emerging adults are going through a lot of changes; they are leaving home for the first time and attending college or starting jobs," said Maher. "As a result, their satisfaction with life can plummet. We decided to focus on emerging adults because they stand to benefit the most from strategies to enhance satisfaction with life."

The researchers recruited two groups of college students at Penn State. The first group, consisting of 190 individuals, entered information into a diary every day for eight days. The second group, consisting of 63 individuals, entered information into a secure website every day for 14 days. Both groups answered questions aimed at determining participants' satisfaction with life, physical activity and self-esteem. The personalities of all participants in the first group were assessed at the outset of the study using the Big Five Inventory short form.

For the second group (the 63 individuals who filled out questionnaires online for 14 days), the researchers wanted to further investigate whether physical activity was indeed, the cause of participants' increased satisfaction with life rather than some other factor such as mental health, fatigue, or Body Mass Index.

"Shifts in depression, anxiety and stress would be expected to influence a person's satisfaction with life at any given point in time," said David Conroy, professor of kinesiology. "In addition, fatigue can be a barrier to engaging in physical activity, and a high Body Mass Index associated with being overweight may cause a person to be less satisfied in a variety of ways."

By controlling for these variables, the researchers were able to determine that the amount of physical activity a person undertakes in a particular day directly influences his or her satisfaction with life. Specifically, the team found that by exercising just a little more than usual a person can significantly improve his or her satisfaction with life.

The results appeared online this week in the journal Health Psychology.

"Based on these findings, we recommend that people exercise a little longer or a little harder than usual as a way to boost satisfaction with life," said Conroy.

VoIP Telephone Service Providers, Giving You Great Worth for Your ...

The telephone is taken into account as the primary software used for communication. Almost every homes plus businesses within the United States has a telephone installed. The comfort it affords is unsurpassed as well as many people consider it as one of the vital piece of expertise ever invented by man. Moreover, with a phone, it is possible for you to to consistently keep up a correspondence with your loved ones and mates at an a lot efficient plus quicker way.
One other software used for communication is the internet. Like the telephone, this is also thought of as a breakthrough in communications technology. The internet allows individuals to speak freely by way of emails plus instantaneous messenger programs. Another great thing about the web is you will be able to share your digital information out of your pc to another user.
The web right this moment can also be used for different purposes. Your youngsters can put to use it to research for their time period papers, you can use it to buy products and services and you may even avail it for entertainment by enjoying online games, hearken to streaming music or watch streaming videos.
Nonetheless, the primary put to use for the internet is for communication.
Right this moment, one other kind of know-how is accessible in the business. This too is considered as a breakthrough in the communications technology. In reality, with all the advantages it might probably supply, many people are now subscribing to this service and are canceling their subscription on their conventional landline phones.
This communication software is named VoIP or Voice over Web Protocol or generally known as internet voice. Many individuals ask why increasingly people at the moment are subscribing from VoIP service providers for this service as well as are eliminating their standard landline phones. Some even requested what is so particular about VoIP.
To begin with, VoIP is very very like your standard telephone. However, VoIP makes use of the web to transmit and obtain audio data. Additionally, your voice is transformed to digital audio data. What this means for you is that it?ll allow you to transmit and receive digital audio information at a much sooner price along with clearer quality.
The fact that VoIP makes use of the web to transmit digital information, long distance as well as overseas name is much cheaper than conventional landline phones. Imagine calling overseas utilizing a traditional landline phone, you will see that an easy 5-minute name can cost quite a lot of money. With VoIP, calling the same destination on the similar length, you will note that it solely price a fraction of what landline telephones will cost you. Some VoIP suppliers provide free long distance as well as abroad call.
Another nice profit that VoIP could offer you is that it?s going to throw in additional telephone features, resembling three-method calling, caller ID, audio conferencing, video conferencing, call ready, return call and different options as standard. In standard landline telephones, you will see that each of those features are thought-about as extra function and they?re going to charge further month-to-month charges for using a specific service. With VoIP, all these options are free.
So, if you are desirous about getting VoIP put in in your home, it is best to consider getting in touch together with your nearest VoIP service provider. As you?ll notice, there are fairly a variety of VoIP service suppliers out in the market at this time providing their companies as well as claiming to be the best.
However, you can never really make sure if a particular VoIP service supplier is really able to providing nice quality service unless you try out their services.
This is why many VoIP service providers in the present day at the moment are offering a trial period, often 30 days, for clients to test the quality of their services. In case you are not satisfied with their services, you may simply inform your service supplier that you?re no longer eager about using their services. If you happen to do this inside the trial period, you will be refunded.
Look for a VoIP service provider that is able to provide maximum advantages for his or her buyers. Some VoIP service providers also supply free ATA (Analog Phone Adapter), free or low price IP telephones and other nice offers.
It?s endorsed that it is best to apply for a service provider that?s already trusted by the neighborhood plus presents a broad vary of nice incentives for his or her clients, similar to free long distance calls, limitless calls to specific countries plus different issues like that.

Senate: Medtronic shaped articles promoting InFuse

(AP) ? Medical device maker Medtronic Inc. helped write and edit medical journal articles attributed to outside physicians, which downplayed the risks of the company's best-selling bone graft, according to a report by Senate investigators.

The Senate Finance Committee said Thursday that the world's largest device maker did not disclose its role in shaping 13 key studies of InFuse, which helped turn the bone graft into an $800-million a year product. The studies, funded by Medtronic, failed to mention serious risks of InFuse including male sterility, infection and increased back and leg pain.

Senate investigators also reported that Medtronic paid the study authors $210 million in consulting fees for unrelated work over 15 years.

"Medtronic's actions violate the trust patients have in their medical care," said Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont, in a statement. "Medical journal articles should convey an accurate picture of the risks and benefits of drugs and medical devices, but patients are at serious risk when companies distort the facts the way Medtronic has."

The Minneapolis company said it disagrees with many of the findings in the report.

"Medtronic vigorously disagrees with any suggestion that the company improperly influenced or authored any of the peer-reviewed published manuscripts discussed in the report, or that Medtronic intended to under-report adverse events," the company said in a statement.

InFuse has been used in a half-million patients and had sales of about $800 million in fiscal 2011, according to Medtronic reports.

The committee's report is the latest in a series of federal inquiries into Medtronic's promotion of InFuse, which is widely used for procedures not deemed safe or effective by federal health authorities. Earlier this year the Department of Justice closed a four-year investigation into InFuse, after first subpoenaing the company in October 2008.

The Food and Drug Administration approved InFuse in 2002 for use in spinal, oral and dental graft procedures, but most of the time it has been used in neck surgeries and other procedures. Physicians are allowed to use drugs and medical products off-label as they see fit, but companies cannot market their products for off-label uses. Use of InFuse in neck surgeries can lead to problems swallowing, breathing and speaking. Some patients had to have other surgeries because of those problems.

Senate investigators said Medtronic staff inserted language into studies of InFuse suggesting the product was less painful than alternatives. In one 2005 incident, a Medtronic staffer helping draft a medical journal article recommended against publishing "significant detail" about adverse events reported with InFuse.

The Senate's findings echo earlier reports published in The Spine Journal last year, alleging researchers involved in key studies of InFuse did not disclose serious side effects. The Spine Journal is the official publication of the North American Spine Society

The group said in a statement it is "hopeful that future research sponsored by Medtronic and others will adhere to much higher standards."

The Senate Finance Committee launched its investigation in June 2011, following the publication of The Spine Journal's report. Senate investigators say Medtronic cooperated with the investigation, turning over 5,000 documents.

The Dow Jones industrial average managed a gain of 3.53 points to close at 13,107.21 after spending much of the day in the red.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 1.03 points to 1,411.94 and the Nasdaq composite rose 1.83 points to 2,987.95.

Stocks?rose in the morning before a mild midday sell-off, then recovered somewhat in the afternoon.

The morning gains came after the Commerce Department estimated that the U.S. economy expanded at a 2 percent annual rate from July through September. That was better than the previous quarter, and better than analysts expected, but not strong enough to bring down the unemployment rate.

Even economic data that is mixed or positive won't outweigh weak earnings, said Lawrence Creatura, a portfolio manager with Federated Investors. Reports like the one on Friday that measure gross domestic product tend to be backwards-looking, while companies are offering forecasts about the months ahead, he said.

"Company earnings trump macro data. Because investors own Apple, they don't own GDP," Creatura said.

Apple fell $5.54 to $604 after saying its profit will decline this holiday season.

Even with Friday's rise,?stocks?lost ground this week, inflecting a sort of death-by-a-thousand-cuts on the rally that began in September. The Dow was down 236.30 points for the week, or 1.8 percent. The S&P has fallen 21.25 points, or 1.5 percent.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber sank 10 percent after a steep dropoff in sales in Europe delivered a blow to its earnings. The?stock?fell $1.28 to $11.02.

The advertising conglomerate Interpublic also turned in results that fell short of analysts' forecasts, and itsstock?fell 2.5 percent, or 26 cents, to $10.29.

Amazon rose $15.32, or 7 percent, to $238.24 despite a smaller-than-expected quarterly profit and a prediction for smaller-than-expected holiday revenue.

Among other companies making big moves, cable TV provider Comcast jumped $1.20, or 3.3 percent, to $37.56 after reporting that its income more than doubled in the latest quarter. Revenue was higher than analysts were expecting, and more customers signed up for premium services like high-definition video recorders.

Varian Medical Systems jumped $8.83, or 15 percent, to $66.93, the biggest increase in the S&P 500 index. The company, which sells medical imaging equipment and radiation-emitting devices for treating tumors, reported a 20 percent rise in income because of higher sales of devices.

On its first day of trading, dairy company WhiteWave Foods lost 25 cents to $16.75, down from its initial public offering price of $17, after rising as high as $19.17 earlier.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.75 percent from 1.82 percent on Thursday.

dynasty travel: channa exogenous: Heli Skiing, Thrilling but Deadly ...

What is heli skiing? You might probably be amazed at how many different kinds of skiing there are.

In general, skiing as a whole can always be dangerous and challenging. There is the snow skiing, the water skiing, and now another form and type of skiing? the heli skiing.

Heli skiing comes from the word skiing and helicopter. The literal analysis of the word would come up with the literal and practical definition for this recreational or sports acivity.

Heli skiing is a term used to denote the practice or action of Alpine skiing with the use of the helicopter. Why the helicopter? You might ask.

The helicopter

Helicopter is used in heli skiing so the skier can be able to gain extreme altitude that would be impossible to be gained or attained by any person without the help of the helicopter.

Heli skiing enables the skier to ski coming off from different and various starting points. Skiing in very remote areas can also be made possible by heli skiing.

As such, heli skiing can be safely and appropriately classified as a very extreme sports. Because heli skiing is mainly done in remote and unlikely places or areas for skiing, the dangers of avalanches is very evident.

Heli skiing is also never free of the dangers posed by the existence of rocks and trees.

The helicopter used for helis skiing is also not the ordinary helicopter used in the modern times. They are specially designed and are used to carrying out the task of helping heli skiers lift up and ski at great heights.

A short history

Heli skiing is an extreme sport developed and introduced in April 1965 in Canada by Hans Gmoser.

Hans Gmoser is an Austrian who migrated to Canada in the 1950s to pursue and chase after greener pastures. Ironically, the man found whiter pasture, because the Canadian state where he got into turned out to be covered with thick snow.

By that time, there are a number of Austrians who went up and posed on top of Mt Everest in the Himalayas. The thrill and excitement aroused the national pride in the extreme sports fanatic, Mr Gmoser.

To have his own participation in the emerging Austrian pride for the heights, Mr Gmoser devised and designed an extreme recreation or sports to lift snow skiers in the Bugaboo Mountains.

Because no one has ever tried it before, he introduced skiing using helicopters to lift up the skier to greater altitudes.

The result was an extreme fun and thrilling exercise. Hel skiing was born.

The modern times

The modern times is characterized by extreme recreation and sports. That is because most people are earning their living through the corporate scene.

Most people are engaged in seats and in front of computers in general to earn their living. That is why the opportunity of going out and sweating it all out through extreme activities in the great otdoors thrill most people.

Heli skiing has it all and more. It can also be too risky and deadly. Experts and less-gutsy people stay away from it because the activity is truly not one to keep your visceral parts at peace.

Older milk, alternatively could be the milk a brand new mother creates following 2-4 times of shipping and delivery. It truly is manufactured in better sums in comparison with Colostrum. Fully developed dairy is made up of h2o, excess fat, carbs, healthy proteins, crucial vitamins and minerals, amino acids and also nutrients. In general, breast area whole milk offers over 2 hundred vitamins and minerals which are good for the two mother as well as your ex child.

There are lots of advantages of giving baby together with breast area whole milk. All these positive aspects consist of diminished risk of contamination, steady as well as proper extra weight, increase in IQ, stronger oral cavity along with beautifully shaped teeth. The Very Coherent Case for Coherent Networking

A constant ? as certain as the fact that there are lots of political ads running in Ohio and Virginia ? is that more bandwidth is needed. That?s true in wireless networks that connect to devices and it is true in the core of the network.

The most common approach to optical core networking is to have lasers flash on and off rapidly ? very rapidly ? to represent ones and zeros. Doing this on many wavelengths simultaneously has enabled the telecommunications infrastructure to keep pace with radically accelerating demands.

This approach may be reaching its limits, however. Another technique is coherent optical networking, which could be the most efficient way of transmitting at 100 Gigabits per second (Gbps), which is the state of the art (or, more accurately, the state of the speed).

The basic idea is explained in this Ciena video (the explanation starts at about the 45-second mark, though no explanation is given for the out-of-place music). Essentially, instead of turning the laser on and off, coherent enables data to be embedded at different amplitudes and phases (areas of the signal).

Lightreading looks at the technology in the context of undersea cables. The ability to radically increase capacity is especially important in this realm, since it can spell the difference between changing electronics at the end points or laying an entirely new cable.

The story quotes Mike Guess, a vice president at Infinera:

The introduction of coherent capabilities has enabled the industry to upgrade from 10-Gbit/s wavelengths, which had been the standard for more than a decade, straight to 100 Gbit/s. Infinera's Guess says the subsea industry has been wanting to upgrade capacity for a long time, "but the problem was making [new systems] reach as far as 10G." Coherent, he says, "has the performance base to make 100G practical."

The story says that coherent also is important for landlubbing networks.

There are announcements on the coherent networking front. Half a world away, for instance, Huawei announced that the Gansu Administration of Radio, Film and Television will deploy China?s first network combining 100 Gbps coherent technology with the vendor?s optical transport network (OTN) platform. The network will support video-on-demand, high-definition video, broadband and other services.

Earlier this month, Ciena announced that, partnering with LightRiver Technologies, it will deploy packet networking and packet-optical transport equipment for Sovernet Fiber Corp. The press release has the details on the deal, which will include Ciena?s coherent technology. Sovernet, a subsidiary of Atlantic Tele-Network, provides telecom service in northern New England.

As Ciena Senior Vice President of Marketing Rick Dodd says in the YouTube video, coherent technology allows the lasers to be tuned like a radio, instead of being turned on and off like a flashlight. That is an effective analogy, and one that suggests that there is a very coherent argument for coherent technology.

Letter: Simmons is 'Dangerous' to Women's Health - in Emmaus Patch

To the editor:

Women are not single-issue voters. We care as much about education as so-called ?women?s? issues. But when politicians threaten havoc on women and their families just to appeal to knee-jerk right-wing voters, you?d better believe we pay attention.

How is it possible that, in the 21st century, a major party candidate like Republican Justin Simmons can be so insulting and downright dangerous in his votes affecting women?s most intimate lives? Simmons is state Representative for District 131, which includes western Lower Saucon Township, Upper Saucon Township, Coopersburg, Upper and Lower Milford townships, eastern Salisbury Township and southeast Allentown.

Simmons co-sponsored PA?s infamous law requiring that women submit to an invasive vaginal ultrasound before having an abortion. Who crafts such an abusive tactic to intimidate women exercising their legal right to abortion? Justin Simmons. Who votes to shut down statewide Planned Parenthood clinics that provide women birth control services--preventing unwanted pregnancies and therefore many abortions--as well as cancer screening and treatment for sexually-transmitted diseases? Justin Simmons. Whose position is more extreme than 83 percent of all Americans on access to safe, legal abortion--opposing it even in cases of rape and incest? Justin Simmons. But who respects women enough not to presume to dictate their decisions on family planning and would consistently vote to fund clinics providing those? Simmons? Democratic opponent, Kevin Deely.

If you are a woman, or believe that women have the same right that you do to make their own decisions, vote for Kevin Deely on November 6.

Postscript Regarding Employers Trying To Use Health Insurance To ...

Back in March, I argued that employers don?t have any moral right to prevent workers from using employer-provided insurance to buy birth control, any more than employers have the right to prevent workers from using employer-provided paychecks to buy birth control.

My view was met in comments with a degree of skepticism.

So forgive me if I?m pleased to note that Judge Carol Jackson, a H.W. Bush-appointee, said much the same thing in a ruling earlier this month (pdf link, emphasis added by me).

The health care plan will offend plaintiffs? religious beliefs only if an employee (or covered family member) makes an independent decision to use the plan to cover counseling related to or the purchase of contraceptives. Already, [plaintiffs] pay salaries to their employees ? money the employees may use to purchase contraceptives or to contribute to a religious organization. By comparison, the contribution to a health care plan has no more than a de minimus impact on the plaintiff?s religious beliefs than paying salaries and other benefits to employees.

The burden of which plaintiffs complain is that funds, which plaintiffs will contribute to a group health plan, might, after a series of independent decisions by health care providers and patients covered by OIH?s plan, subsidize someone else?s participation in an activity that is condemned by plaintiffs? religion. This Court rejects the proposition that requiring indirect financial support of a practice, from which plaintiff himself abstains according to his religious principles, constitutes a substantial burden on plaintiff?s religious exercise.

[The Religious Freedom Restoration Act] is a shield, not a sword. It protects individuals from substantial burdens on religious exercise that occur when the government coerces action one?s religion forbids, or forbids action one?s religion requires; it is not a means to force one?s religious practices upon others. RFRA does not protect against the slight burden on religious exercise that arises when one?s money circuitously flows to support the conduct of other free-exercise-wielding individuals who hold religious beliefs that differ from one?s own.

Amanda at Pandagon writes:

Because this is about female sexuality and there?s all these sex-phobic and misogynist arguments being thrown around, the basic issue has gotten somewhat obscured, which is that your boss is not actually your master. [...] If the door is opened to allowing employers to control how you use your compensation after you?ve earned it, god only knows what other kinds of restrictions on how you spend your money they?re going to start angling for.

I think this is one of the basic differences between conservatives (including, alas, most libertarians) and progressives. To paint in broad strokes: When conservatives talk about protecting liberty, they want to protect the bosses from the government; when progressives talk about protecting liberty, we want to protect the workers from the bosses.

Of course, this ruling is not the end of the matter; I?m sure eventually the Supreme Court will decide. Given the conservative majority?s dislike of rights for workers, I won?t be surprised if Judge Jackson is eventually overturned. One more reason to hope Obama wins reelection.

Scientists build 'mechanically active' DNA material

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Artificial muscles and self-propelled goo may be the stuff of Hollywood fiction, but for UC Santa Barbara scientists Omar Saleh and Deborah Fygenson, the reality of it is not that far away. By blending their areas of expertise, the pair have created a dynamic gel made of DNA that mechanically responds to stimuli in much the same way that cells do. The results of their research were published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"This is a whole new kind of responsive gel, or what some might call a 'smart' material," said Saleh, associate professor of materials, affiliated with UCSB's Biomolecular Science and Engineering program. "The gel has active mechanical capabilities in that it generates forces independently, leading to changes in elasticity or shape, when fed ATP molecules for energy?much like a living cell."

Their DNA gel, at only 10 microns in width, is roughly the size of a eukaryotic cell, the type of cell of which humans are made. The miniscule gel contains within it stiff DNA nanotubes linked together by longer, flexible DNA strands that serve as the substrate for molecular motors.

"DNA gives you a lot more design control," said Fygenson, associate professor of physics and also affiliated with UCSB's BMSE program. "This system is exciting because we can build nano-scale filaments to specifications." Using DNA design, she said, they can control the stiffness of the nanotubes and the manner and extent of their cross-linking, which will determine how the gel responds to stimuli.

Using a bacterial motor protein called FtsK50C, the scientists can cause the gel to react in the same way cytoskeletons react to the motor protein myosin?by contracting and stiffening. The protein binds to predetermined surfaces on the long linking filaments, and reels them in, shortening them and bringing the stiffer nanotubes closer together. To determine the gel's movement the scientists attached a tiny bead to its surface and measured its position before and after activation with the motor protein.

The advance, said Saleh, is that this gel "quantitatively shows similar active fluctuations and mechanics to cells."

"This new material could provide a means for controllably testing active gel mechanics in a way that will tell us more about how the cytoskeleton works," Saleh said. Like a cell, which consumes adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for energy, the DNA gel's movement runs on ATP, allowing for faster, stronger mechanics than other smart gels based on synthetic polymers.

"The development of active gels represents a water-shed event for the broader materials community," commented Craig Hawker, director of the Materials Research Laboratory at UCSB: an NSF MRSEC, which provided seed money for their research. "By exploiting cellular building blocks, it offers unique design parameters when compared to existing gel systems that can be used in a wide range of both established biomedical applications as well as totally new applications."

The project has potential applications for a variety of fields, including smart materials, artificial muscle, understanding cytoskeletal mechanics and research into nonequilibrium physics, as well as DNA nanotechnology. Long-term implications of this research are significant, Hawker added, with the final result being "a fundamental [advance] in soft-materials science and engineering."

Having created a gel that can replicate contractions, Saleh and Fygenson are now looking to refine their technique and enable distinct movements, such as twisting and crawling, or using other motor proteins that would allow the gel to mimic other cell behaviors, such as shape-shifting and dividing.

"Biology provides a wide range of motors that we have only begun to explore," Saleh said.

"And the suite of nanostructure designs and geometries at our disposal is nearly limitless," echoed Fygenson.

Apple slims down iMac, eliminates DVD drive

(AP) ? Apple unveiled a new version of its iMac desktop computer that's one-fifth the thickness of the old model around the edges.

At 5 millimeters around the edges, the new iMac is thinner than most stand-alone computer monitors.

"There is an entire computer in here," Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller said Tuesday as he unveiled the new iMac to a cheering audience.

The new iMac bulges in the back, however. Schiller did not say how much.

The new model achieves its severe thinness in part by eliminating the optical disc drive. Apple has been leaving those drives out of its most recent laptop models as well. The original iMac was one of the first computers to lack a floppy disk drive, something that is now rare among PCs.

An iMac model with a 21.5-inch screen will start shipping in November for $1,299 and up, Schiller said. A 27-inch version will start at $1,799.

Apple also introduced its Fusion Drive, which combines flash and hard drive storage in one interface. In doing so, the hybrid combines the faster speed of flash memory and the higher capacity of regular hard drives. Apple says it's nearly as fast as flash memory on its own and is available as an option instead of the regular hard drive.

As Schiller introduced the new iMacs, he showed on a giant display how the iMac has shrunk over the years.

(AP Photo/Starpix, Kristina Bumphrey, file)

(AP) ? Lindsay Lohan won't face criminal charges after being accused of clipping a man with her car outside a nightclub, one of a string of troubles the actress has encountered behind the wheel and elsewhere in recent months.

The "Mean Girls" and "Freaky Friday" star had been due to make her first court appearance in the case Tuesday, but the Manhattan district attorney's office said Monday that there is now no court date scheduled at any point.

Prosecutors wouldn't elaborate on their decision not to move forward on the allegations about the Sept. 21 episode, which was captured on surveillance video. Lohan's spokesman had called the claims false.

"As we said from the beginning, this is a big nothing," the spokesman, Steve Honig, said Monday.

Lohan, 26, was arrested on a charge of leaving an accident scene after restaurant worker Jose Rodriguez said her Porsche hit him and hurt his knee as she turned from a Manhattan street into an alley by the Dream Hotel. Police said no alcohol was involved. Rodriguez, 34, was walking by after leaving his job at another hotel nearby.

Lohan was released with an appearance ticket. Rodriguez called emergency services and was taken to a hospital.

Police released grainy surveillance footage that shows Lohan's car turning as Rodriguez passed in front of it. Blurring to conceal witnesses' faces partially obscures the scene, and it's not clear exactly what happens as he is in front of the car. The video does show him staying on his feet and walking after the car as it continues into the alley.

The encounter came with Lohan on informal probation for taking a necklace last year without permission from a jewelry store in Venice, Calif.; she spent 35 days on house arrest in that case. While she isn't required to check in with a judge or probation officer, she could face a jail term if she gets in further trouble.

The actress' latest project, "Liz & Dick," is set to premiere on Lifetime on Nov. 25. She plays Elizabeth Taylor in the biopic, which chronicles the roller coaster romance of Taylor and Richard Burton.

Lohan ? whose earlier problems with cocaine, alcohol and driving landed her in a Los Angeles-area jail for about two weeks in 2010 ? has had some other brushes with the law recently. In May, she was cleared of allegations that she hit a Hollywood nightclub manager with her car. The next month, she and her assistant were in a California crash that sent both to a hospital; neither was seriously hurt.

About a week after the episode near the Dream Hotel, Lohan told authorities a man grabbed her in a New York hotel room in an argument over cellphone photos. The man was initially arrested, but the arrest was voided hours later when the charge could not be substantiated, law enforcement officials said.

Earlier this month, police were called to Lohan's childhood home in the New York suburbs after getting a report that she and her mother were fighting. Investigators found nothing criminal happened, Nassau County police said.
