Child With Hearing Disorder Gets Wish
Mar 26, 2013 11:14pm
ABC News? Dan Harris, Julia Bain and Dr. Mark Abdelmalek report:
You would have to look closely, but if you kept your eye on Carson Rubin, you would see he is consistently one step behind his preschool classmates.
Carson claps only after seeing everyone else doing it, sits for a few more seconds when all the other kids stand up, and stares off when teachers are talking to him.
?I think he?s constantly trying to keep up,? Shay Rubin, Carson?s mother, told ABC News. ?I think he wears himself out trying to keep up with everybody else, and trying to figure out what?s going on all the time.?
Carson is 5 years old and has a condition called auditory neuropathy, a hearing and nerve disorder where sound waves entering the ear can?t reach the right parts of the brain.
For Carson, the world around him sounds like a radio station that?s not quite tuned in.
?You hear a sound, but it?s not very clear,? Lauren Stott, Carson?s audiologist said. ?It?s distorted or static. You feel like, ah, I can tell there?s something there but it?s not quite right.?
Carson?s parents worry his condition is not only damaging his intellectual development, but also endangers his safety.
If there was a car coming fast down a street, he wouldn?t hear it.
The good news is that there is a treatment that could dramatically improve Carson?s hearing called cochlear implants.
Karen Munoz, associate professor of audiology at Utah State University, who is not involved with Carson?s case, said: ?Cochlear implants will open his world to sound and the ability to fully engage in the world around him.?
Cochlear implants involve a surgery that has produced miraculous results for many children. But at a cost as high as $132,000 per ear, individuals would either?need to have $264,000 on hand, or an insurance policy that covers the procedure.
The bad news is that when the Rubin?s first asked their insurance plan, Coventry Health Care of Georgia, they were told their policy didn?t cover cochlear implants.
The exclusion for cochlear implants is listed on the Coventry Health Care of Georgia plan documents provided to the Rubins.
?Without appropriate access to hearing the skill to develop spoken language won?t occur,? said Munoz.
For Carson to get the surgery the Rubins were daunted by the idea they may have to set?up a payment plan to get their son the treatment he needed to hear.
When ABC News? first contacted Coventry Health Care of Georgia, Coventry issued the following statement:
?Coventry is committed to offering affordable coverage and access to high quality care to all of our members.?While Coventry?s policies provide coverage for a broad scope of benefits and services,?no health?insurance?policy?covers?every?procedure. ?Currently, states determine which benefits and services must be covered, and Coventry?s policies always comply with state requirements. Consistent with the standards for Georgia?s small group market and state regulations, Coventry?s small group policies have not covered cochlear implants.?
As many as 90 percent of private insurance companies and all Medicaid programs cover cochlear implants.
A 2008 Vanderbilt study estimated that 12,816 children would be considered for cochlear implants each year.? And every year more than 1,000 kids who are candidates are likely to be denied cochlear implants by their private insurance companies.
In 2011, Coventry earned roughly half a billion dollars in profit. Allen Wise, Coventry?s CEO, is number 53 on the Forbes list of richest executives, and in 2011 had a total compensation package of $20.87 million, which could cover Carson?s implants 80 times over.
?We?re just an American family trying to raise children and have a family and this is the predicament we find ourselves in,? Brian Rubin said.
Brian Rubin and Shay Rubin, a stay-at-home mom, live in suburban Atlanta, with their two children. At first, the parents turned to Facebook to raise money for their son?s cochlear implants, raising nearly $10,000, a drop in the bucket for a procedure.
Despite the setbacks, the Rubins remained determined.
?One way or another he?s going to get what he needs,? said Shay.
Coventry Health Care denied ABC News? repeated requests for an on-camera interview, but when ABC News made one last call to Coventry we learned they had changed their position on covering cochlear implants.
Coventry issued the following statement to ABC News on the matter:
?Until very recently, small group policies in Georgia have not covered cochlear implants, and?Coventry?s policies remained consistent with those standards. We understand policies have shifted, and as a result, we are making a similar change to our policies.?Coventry?Health Care of Georgia will cover cochlear implants for commercial members as of April 1.?
Carson Rubin?s cochlear implant surgery is scheduled on April 19.
This change in policy is only for members of Coventry Health Care in Georgia. ? But while Coventry Health Care operates plans in 25 states, cochlear implants are only covered for their members in Utah and now Georgia.
When asked if Coventry Health Care would change its cochlear implant coverage policy for its other 23 states, they told ABC News, ?We are?re-evaluating?our policies in other states.?
But coverage for hearing devices and specifically cochlear implants may improve with the Affordable Care Act, possibly as early as 2014.
Janet McCarty, the private health plans?adviser?at the American Speech-Language Hearing Association and a member of the organization?s Government Relations and Public Policy Committee told ABC News, ?Under the Affordable Care Act, as one of the essential benefits, there are rehabilitation and habilitation services that?theoretically?would cover health care services that would help a person keep, learn or improve skills or?functions?of daily living.? ?McCarty hopes hearing aids and speech generating devices like cochlear implants would be covered under the Affordable Care Act.
The Rubins? prayers were answered and when they heard Coventry had changed their policy to cover Carson?s cochlear implants, the shock was almost too much.
?I kind of couldn?t breathe for awhile,? Shay Rubin said.

Gene therapy may aid failing hearts
Mar. 25, 2013 ? In an animal study, researchers at the University of Washington show that it was possible to use gene therapy to boost heart muscle function. The finding suggests that it might be possible to use this approach to treat patients whose hearts have been weakened by heart attacks and other heart conditions.
Led by University of Washington (UW) Professor and Vice Chair of Bioengineering Michael Regnier and Dr. Chuck Murry, director of the Center for Cardiovascular Biology and co-director of the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine at UW, the study appears online today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
Normally, muscle contraction is powered by a molecule, the nucleotide called Adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP). Other naturally occurring nucleotides can also power muscle contraction, but, in most cases, they have proven to be less effective than ATP.
In an earlier study of isolated muscle, however, Regnier, Murry and colleagues had found that one naturally occurring molecule, called 2 deoxy-ATP (dATP), was actually more effective than ATP in powering muscle contraction, increasing both the speed and force of the contraction, at least over the short-term.
In the new PNAS study, the researchers wanted to see whether this effect could be sustained. To do this, they used genetic engineering to create a strain of mice whose cells produced higher-than-normal levels of an enzyme called Ribonucleotide Reductase, which converts the precursor of ATP, adenosine-5'-diphosphate or ADP, to dADP, which, in turn, is rapidly converted to dATP.
"This fundamental discovery, that dATP can act as a 'super-fuel' for the contractile machinery of the heart, or myofilaments, opens up the possibility to treat a variety of heart failure conditions," Regnier said. "An exciting aspect of this study and our ongoing work is that a relatively small increase in dATP in the heart cells has a big effect on heart performance."
The researchers found that increased production of the enzyme Ribonucleotide Reductase increased the concentration of dATP within heart cells approximately tenfold, and even though this level was still less than one to two percent of the cell's total pool of ATP, the increase led to a sustained improvement in heart muscle function, with the genetically engineered hearts contracting more quickly and with greater force.
"It looks as though we may have stumbled on an important pathway that nature uses to regulate heart contractility," Murry added. "The same pathway that heart cells use to make the building blocks for DNA during embryonic growth makes dATP to supercharge contraction when the adult heart is mechanically stressed."
Importantly, the elevated dATP effect was achieved without imposing additional metabolic demands on the cells, suggesting the modification would not harm the cell's functioning over the long-term.
The finding, the authors write, suggest that treatments that elevate dATP levels in heart cells may prove to be an effective treatment for heart failure.

Syria rebels take control of strategic southern base
By Erika Solomon
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Rebels seized an air defense base near Syria's strategic southern international highway on Saturday, activists said, a gain that could bolster opposition fighters trying to secure supply routes to the capital Damascus.
Syria's southern provinces bordering Jordan and Israel have become an increasingly significant battleground as the capital comes into play, with President Bashar al-Assad's forces and his loyalist militias hitting back hard to prevent rebel advances.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a network of sources across Syria, said the base commander was among those killed in the two-week battle for the air defense site in Deraa province bordering Jordan.
"Fighters from the Nusra Front, Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade, and other battalions seized control of the 38th division air defense base, near the town of Saida on the Damascus-Amman highway, after 16 days of fierce clashes," the Observatory said.
The Nusra Front is an Islamist militant group suspected of links to al Qaeda and blacklisted by the United States as a "terrorist group". Its forces, which include foreign fighters, have come to increasing prominence in the revolt.
Videos published by opposition activists showed cheering fighters driving tanks around the base and loading boxes of ammunition onto flatbed trucks. The rebels also said in the videos they had freed dozens of prisoners held at the base.
A video uploaded by the Observatory showed what it said was the body of base commander General Mahmoud Darwish lying in a pool of blood in a bathroom.
Other activist videos showed the corpses of soldiers in camouflage fatigues scattered in the grass outside the base, shot in the head.
It was not immediately possible to verify the pictures or opposition reports. The Syrian government has severely restricted access to Syria for foreign journalists and international aid groups.
CLASHES NEAR ISRAEL BORDER
Fighting has also raged near the border with Israel, which is increasingly concerned Islamist rebels may be emboldened to end the quiet on the Golan front maintained by Assad and his father before him during their four decade rule of Syria.
Israel captured the Golan plateau from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war.
Rebels on Wednesday overran at least three towns near the Israeli-Syrian disengagement line but appeared to lose ground after militias loyal to Assad pushed them back in a fierce battle.
Rami Abdelrahman, head of the Observatory, said he recorded one of the heaviest single death tolls for rebels in the fighting near the Israeli border.
"We have 35 fighters recorded by name and at least 20 more missing, this is a huge number to be lost in a single battle and shows how hard they (Assad's forces) are fighting for these areas," Abdelrahman told Reuters.
He said the pro-government militias involved were made up of fighters from Syria's Druze minority, a sect which for some time had stayed on the sidelines of the conflict but now increasingly appears to be throwing its weight behind Assad.
Their involvement could increase sectarian bloodshed in Syria, already wracked by tensions between the Sunni Muslim majority that has led the uprising and the Alawite minority to which Assad belongs.
Tit-for-tat kidnappings and killings between the sects have become common as the uprising spiraled into a bloody civil war that has killed more than 70,000 people.
Alawite opposition campaigners, increasingly concerned for the fate of their community as fighting continues, will meet this weekend to discuss options for supporting a democratic alternative to Assad's rule and try to distance themselves from security forces attempts to crush the revolt.

AT&T to launch Digital Life in 15 markets, hopes to enter home automation field
AT&T is finally set to launch its Digital Life home automation service, and it's ready to do so in a big way. Initially planned for just eight markets, the telephony giant has expanded its coverage to 15 starting this spring, with the hope of 50 by the end of the year. Essentially a way to monitor your home, Digital Life packages may include live video, the ability to remotely toggle the light on and off, change the thermostat, unlock the door and more. Customers are able to set up programs and alerts via smartphone or tablet applications or the web. AT&T should bring some heavy clout to the home automation party, though it won't be the first big-name communications company to do so. For more information on Digital Life and what it offers, have a peek at the source below.

SKorea misidentifies China as cyberattack origin
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korean investigators said Friday they had mistakenly identified a Chinese Internet address as the source of a cyberattack that paralyzed tens of thousands of computers at banks and broadcasters earlier this week. But they said they still believe the attack originated from abroad.
The error by South Korean regulators raises questions about their ability to track down the source of an attack that hit 32,000 computers at six companies Wednesday and exposed South Korea's Internet security and vulnerability to hackers.
South Korean investigators said Thursday that a malicious code that spread through the server of one target, Nonghyup Bank, was traced to an Internet Protocol address in China. Even then it was clear that the attack could have originated somewhere else, because such data can easily be manipulated by hackers. Experts suspect North Korea was behind the attack.
The state-run Korea Communications Commission said Friday that the IP address actually belonged to a computer at the bank. The IP address was used only for the company's internal network and was identical to a public Chinese address.
"We were careless in our efforts to double-check and triple-check," KCC official Lee Seung-won told reporters. "We will now make announcements only if our evidence is certain."
Commission officials said an analysis of malware and servers indicates the attack was likely orchestrated from abroad. They didn't elaborate.
Yonhap news agency, in an analysis Friday, called the blunder "ridiculous" and said the announcement is certain to undermine the government's credibility.
Experts in Seoul suspect North Korea in the attack on broadcasters YTN, MBC and KBS, as well as Nonghyup and two other banks. Seoul alleges six cyberattacks by North Korea on South Korean targets since 2009. But the investigation will take weeks, and officials say they have no proof yet of Pyongyang's involvement.
South Korean officials say that Wednesday's attacks appeared to come from "a single organization" but they have yet to assign blame. North Korea hasn't yet mentioned the shutdown.
South Korea has set up a team of computer security experts from the government, military and private sector since to identify the hackers and is preparing to deal with more possible attacks, presidential spokesman Yoon Chang-jung told reporters earlier Friday. He didn't elaborate on the possibility of more attacks.
Determining who's behind a digital attack is often difficult. But North Korea is a leading suspect for several reasons.
It has unleashed a torrent of threats against Seoul and Washington since punishing U.N. sanctions were imposed for Pyongyang's Feb. 12 nuclear test. It calls ongoing routine U.S.-South Korean military drills a threat to its existence. Pyongyang also threatened revenge after blaming Seoul and Washington for a separate Internet shutdown that disrupted its own network last week.
The cyberattack did not affect South Korea's government, military or infrastructure, and there were no initial reports that customers' bank records were compromised. But it disabled cash machines and disrupted commerce in this tech-savvy, Internet-dependent country.
All three of the banks that were hit were back online and operating regularly Friday. It could be next week before the broadcasters' systems have fully recovered, though they said their programming was never affected.

Inequitable Salaries at Nonprofits Are a Kind of Bullying - Money ...
No one likes a bully, whether it?s the schoolyard variety shaking down little kids for lunch money or the diva boss screaming curses over the handling of her morning latte. But when the harassment is less obvious, more corporate than individual?or when it benefits us in some way?our righteous indignation tends to fade.
?Economic bullying? is a good example: paying some people inequitable salaries and relying on free labor. Why are we willing to let those practices go unchallenged?
In a recent scholarly paper, John Tropman and Emily Nicklett, both professors of social work at the University of Michigan, attempt to reckon with our collective reluctance to confront economic bullying. The authors pull no punches in addressing social exploitation: the structures that force some people to contribute low- or no-cost labor so that others can get richer.
Social exploitation isn?t new. It has been practiced in its most vile form as slavery, but the principles of exploitation are still with us and disturbingly widespread. As the abolitionist Frederick Douglass put it, ?Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them.?
When I caught up with Professor Tropman at his office, I asked how social exploitation plays out today and what effect it has on nonprofits.
He pointed to two ways in which the nonprofit world is both victim and victimizer:? Women and human-service workers are systematically underpaid, and organizations are increasingly turning to volunteers as unpaid but essential labor. He doesn?t knock volunteerism, but he argues that, because nonprofits haven?t clearly articulated their value to society or, in many cases, what it costs them to provide that value, they have developed the bad practice of paying people as little as possible. Philanthropy, for its part, tends to reward those organizations with the lowest investment in human resources while simultaneously creating programs aimed at lifting underpaid laborers such as immigrants, single parents, and veterans out of poverty.
The government plays a role, too. As the major purchaser of social services, it often seeks to force costs down to bargain-basement levels as a way to balance the budget. This was thrown into relief during the 2008 recession when unemployment was high, especially among low-wage workers. Demand for nonprofit services like food assistance was up, but some government buyers were not paying on their nonprofit contracts or were canceling them altogether.
While statistics point to an economic recovery, many families can?t recover because they started out under water.
Professor Tropman believes that the government?s best response to this problem is to defend and expand entitlements and reduce inequalities in taxation policy, though he is clear in his position that ?capitalism works, but it has a cost.? When I asked him why civil society accepts economic bullying, he said that the prevailing attitude seems to be ?to whom much has been given more will be given.?? He cites as an example the increasing disparity between executive and rank-and-file salaries.? In short, the social contract through which we assume shared responsibility for the community is broken. And the prospect of rebuilding this sense of community is challenged by the ease with which people increasingly live, work, and play in isolation. As we retire to our respective corners of the internet, our empathy for one another dissipates accordingly.
Unfortunately, these days when we see the proverbial bully holding the kid upside down, we raise our hands but not to help the victim or to strike back but to catch the falling coins for ourselves. It may not occur to us that we will be the next target in the bully?s sights.
How do you think the nonprofit world can draw attention to social exploitation? How can it reverse the conditions that lead to and perpetuate it? Add your comments below.

If you want to buy and sell easily without taking delivery of actual metal, then perhaps you should invest in an ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) for gold and silver. The fees are minimal; ETFs are convenient and good for frequent trading. The two most popular are the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEARCA:GLD) and iShares Silver Trust (NYSEARCA:SLV). They are also criticized by many analysts, so I encourage you to also consider PHYS, PSLV, GTU, and others.
If you want paper, then buy options or futures contracts and be careful. When elephants fight, the grass gets trampled ? and most of us are merely grass in the world of futures trading.
You Want to Buy Physical Gold and Silver Coins and Bars. Good! Where?
There are many dealers who will sell over the internet and ship to your home or to a secure storage vault. Their prices will vary slightly and so will their terms for payment and delivery. See the partial list and brief comments at the end of this article to get started. There are many other fine dealers in addition to the few examples I have listed.
Storage
More important than where you buy is whether you will buy for delivery to your home, delivery to a secure domestic storage facility, or for delivery to a vault outside of the United States.
Your home?? Convenient and close but vulnerable to fire and theft. Your sock drawer is not recommended ? buy a safe, hide it, and tell very few.
Safe deposit box at local bank?? Secure, less convenient, probably not insured, and vulnerable to a search warrant, court order, and banking shutdown. Use a local bank, not a branch of a huge mega-bank.
Secure storage in the USA?? Very secure and safe but may not be close or convenient. Are you comfortable with such storage? If so, then this is an excellent choice. Choose a vault OUTSIDE the banking system.
International Storage?? You can store in commercial vaults in London, Canada, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, and other locations. The IRS?MAY?want to be told what you are storing and its value if you are an American citizen and storing internationally. See?IRS Rules.
How Do you Sell Your Gold and Silver?
If you are buying for insurance against devaluing paper currencies, perhaps you intend to hold it for a long time or expect to will it to your family. In either case, don?t sell it.
If your gold and silver coins are in your possession, then you can sell via the internet or take them to a local coin store. Most companies that will sell to you via the Internet or a phone call will also buy back at a slight discount to sales price (they have to sell at a mark-up to stay in business). You can also sell on eBay or to private individuals. There probably will be tax implications, so consult with your tax advisor.
When to Sell Gold and Silver?
Again, there is no right answer for everyone. Some will argue that gold and silver are essential insurance against unbacked paper currencies and so should never be sold. Investors may want to hold until they see some large price, say $150 silver and $4,000 gold. Others wish to trade in and out, buying low and selling high. Your choice will help determine if you want paper silver, an ETF, coins, or bars, stored domestically or offshore. It is easy to sell paper or an ETF. It may be less convenient to sell coins and bars that you have stored in a safe deposit box. It probably will be easy to sell gold stored in Switzerland.
Jim Sinclair, legendary gold trader and investor, says buy ?fish lines? and sell ?rhino horns.? What he means is that markets, especially gold and silver markets, often move too far, too fast, both up and down. The down moves ? the fish lines ? scare out leveraged speculators and ?weak hands? and usually indicate good buy points for long-term investors. When leveraged speculators, hot money, and the public drive the market higher in a parabolic spike upward, the chart looks like a rhino horn, and that often indicates a good time to sell. There will be many more signals, but most of us are overwhelmed by greed and fear, especially panic, and we often miss the signals. In 1929 the ?signal? was to sell when shoeshine boys were giving stock tips. Something similar will happen at the next panic high in gold and silver, but that may be years away.
IRS Rules
The IRS has instituted new rules for United States taxpayers. We are now required to report holdings of foreign assets on form 8938 (Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets) and form TD F 90-22.1. Consult with your tax attorney and financial advisor, but the simple interpretation is this:
If you own financial assets in another country worth more than certain amounts,?usually?you must report these assets on form 8938 with your federal tax return and on form TD F 90-22.1 due June 30 of each year. It is wise to comply with IRS requirements as the penalties can be severe. There may be exceptions that your professional advisor can discuss, but these relatively new requirements may influence your choice of investments and their storage locations.

Want To Know Your Trains Status?
It can also be of help if one knows the name of some or at least one of the intermediate stations. The Indian Railways are taking measures to assure a safe as well as a convenient process of a journey which includes also the booking process. The way the organization operated formerly used to be pretty complex and time consuming, but today with the significant effort taking by the organization, they can proudly state that the systems has been modernized to a great extent and certainly for the better.
You can find the status of the train by following a few simple steps which anybody can follow easily. According to these steps, you can go to the irctc website which is the Indian Railways official website. After that, you have to put in a few details such as the number of the train or its name or the name of the station from which or to which it is moving. The code number of these stations can also be used alternatively. A few options will show when you enter all these details.
Once you get those, you have to select the train you are looking for details about. This will offer you info on the date of the departure of the train from the source station and that of the destination station the train will stop at. Also, it will supply you information on the current status of the train, status of the train which means whether the train is on time or got delayed and the time at which the train is expected to arrive at the concerned station and depart from the same.
In the past, there was only one option to check the PNR status of the train. But today, there are multiple options to check the PNR status, the timing of the train and its reservation enquiry too. One easy option is to dial 139 which is a centralized toll free number and place an enquiry. Or you can choose to go online on the websites irctc.co.in or indianrail.gov.in in order to know the current status of the train, seat availability or PNR status. It is possible to get your PNR status by smsing PNR to 54959.

Presidential Voices Interview Series: Beverly Daniel Tatum ...
AASHE?s Presidential Voices interview series features conversations with heads of higher education institutions who are inspiring sustainability leaders. To recommend a president or chancellor for this series, contact Judy Walton, chief publications officer, at judy@aashe.org.
Beverly Daniel Tatum, Spelman College President since 2002, is our guest for this interview. Spelman is America's oldest historically Black college for women, and a leading liberal arts institution. It has been recognized for its environmental efforts with a Green Key Award from the U.S. EPA. In 2010, Dr. Tatum signed the American College & University Presidents? Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). Most recently, she spearheaded a Wellness Revolution at the college to empower and educate Spelman women on the value of lifelong wellness as a means of building strong, sustainable communities. Dr. Tatum is a member of the President?s Board of Advisors to the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. She earned a B.A. degree in psychology from Wesleyan University, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan. She also holds an M.A. in religious studies from Hartford Seminary.
Judy Walton: Why is sustainability important to Spelman, and how does it fit the college?s overall mission and tagline, ?A Choice to Change the World??
Beverly Tatum: Sustainability should be important to everyone because it?s essential to the viability of the planet on which we live. It was listed as a key priority in my 2007 convocation talk, and sustainability goals are incorporated into Spelman?s Strategic Plan for 2015. Sustainability is also listed up front on our About Us page.
When we talk about the mission of Spelman, we talk about preparing young women to be leaders; we talk about educating the whole person?mind, body, and spirit?developing her intellectual, academic and ethical leadership potential. You can?t talk about ethics without talking about responsibility, and you can?t talk about responsibility, in a holistic way, without talking about responsibility for the environment of which we are a part. So when we think about preparing students for the future --preparing them to be ethical leaders ? certainly an awareness of sustainability is critical and an important part of what we mean when we say, ?A Choice to Change the World.?
As I have said in other contexts, we are changing the world all the time, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. We?re not always conscious of the way we?re changing the world, but each of us in our daily interactions is making an impact. When we think about our environmental impact we want to be conscious of this in order to be good stewards of the planet on which we live and to make sure that the change we?re making is a positive one as opposed to one that?s detrimental to the long- term health of ourselves and those we care about.
JW: What key initiatives have led to Spelman?s recognition as a sustainability leader among HBCUs?
BT: We talk about sustainability at Spelman in the context of three areas of focus: One is traditional environmental sustainability. The second is personal sustainability, which has to do with our own personal health and wellness. The third focus area is communal sustainability -- the health and well-being of our campus as an institution. Each focus area has an initiative associated with it on our campus.
When we talk about environmental sustainability, we highlight Spelman?s Climate Action Plan and its status as a signatory of the American College & University Presidents? Climate Commitment. As part of this commitment, we?ve set a target date for achieving carbon neutrality ? we chose the year 2056, which is the 175th anniversary of the College.
We?re also committed to building green. In 2008, The Suites residence hall opened ? the first-ever LEED Silver certified residence hall at a historically Black college or university. That commitment has been strengthened by a policy adopted by our board of trustees in 2010 stating that all new construction and renovations will be completed at no less than LEED Silver standards. The renovation of Laura Spelman Rockefeller Hall concluded in the fall of 2012 and we?re delighted that it has received LEED Gold certification. In support of our Wellness Revolution, we are planning a new project ? Read Hall, which will of course be completed using LEED standards.
Also under the environmental sustainability umbrella we include curricular innovation and research. Along with everyday opportunities for conservation, we want to provide curriculum to further integrate sustainability across courses and disciplines with the goal of graduating empowered women who embody all three dimensions of Sustainable Spelman. We have faculty and staff Green Leaders who are working on environmental and sustainability solutions regionally, nationally and globally.
When we speak about personal sustainability we highlight our sustainability pledge as well as our Wellness Revolution and all it represents. Whether we?re talking about stroke, heart disease, breast cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, or HIV/AIDS, all these illnesses disproportionately impact Black woman. However, with changes in our diet, behavior, exercise and stress reduction, we can positively impact the current statistics. But we have to be knowledgeable about how to make those changes. Through the Wellness Revolution, we aim to educate the Spelman community on how to start and sustain healthy habits for life-long wellness.
Through communal sustainability we aim to make sure that Spelman College as an institution remains viable for many years. This requires all of us to abide by our standards of excellence which are captured by what we call the 3 C?s: civility, commitment, and consistency in excellence and performance.
JW: AASHE Bulletin recently featured Spelman?s plan to eliminate intercollegiate athletics in order to dedicate resources to a campus-wide fitness/wellness initiative. What was behind this decision, and how do fitness and wellness relate to sustainability?
BT: As I mentioned, personal sustainability is a key priority here at Spelman. When we decided to discontinue our participation in intercollegiate athletics in May 2013, we were not rejecting sports, or even competition -- just the limited benefit that our NCAA participation offered a few student athletes in favor of a program of activity that would support lifelong fitness for all 2,100 of our students.
The intent of our wellness program is to transition our students from high school sports to lifelong fitness. Just as we develop habits of the mind ? such as critical-thinking skills that will be used for a lifetime -- we want to develop habits of the body that will support healthy and sustainable living for a lifetime.
If the health status of African-American women is an indicator of the health status of blacks living in America, the news is not good. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 44 percent of Black women over age 20 have high blood pressure, and Black women are more likely to suffer from ailments such as diabetes, heart disease, breast cancer and stroke and to die from them early in comparison to women of other ethnicities. All of these illnesses are linked to obesity and lack of physical activity.
Given these statistics, the need for a Wellness Revolution at Spelman is urgent, because it is our population -- young black women -- that is among the most at risk for negative health outcomes. Committed to educating the whole person - mind, body and spirit - we have an opportunity to change the health trajectory of the young women we serve. We are taking this opportunity seriously through the development of a creative wellness program. Wellness and societal sustainability go hand-in-hand.
JW: As a leader of one of the premier HBCUs, and a 2005 recipient of the prestigious Brock International Prize in Education, what strategies do you recommend to make campus sustainability a more diverse, inclusive movement?
BT: At Spelman we are leading by example and certainly we take pride in the various presentations that members of our campus community have given at professional events, national conferences and in the media. Along with Art Frazier, our director of facilities (who presented at AASHE 2012), we also have faculty members like Fatemeh Shafiei, chair and associate professor of political science and Jerry Wever, assistant professor of anthropology, who provide insight on the various sustainability efforts at Spelman to the broader community. Through these opportunities and others, such as our student Green Ambassadors, we have been able to tell the Spelman story in a way that we hope inspires others.
JW: How is Spelman tracking its sustainability progress?
BT: Our Climate Action Plan that I described earlier contains benchmarks and timetables, and includes a completed STARS checklist detailing our progress. For personal sustainability, we?re tracking participation in healthy living behaviors such as exercise. As part of our wellness program, our wellness coordinator tracks student, faculty and staff participation. When asked what will be the measure of success for our wellness program, I like to say, ?when we have a culture of movement at Spelman College.?
JW: As an institutional leader, what are your biggest challenges in advancing sustainability initiatives?
BT: As at many institutions, two of the biggest challenges to advancing initiatives are limited resources and complacency. When advocating for any initiative, securing resources can be a challenge and that has to do with being in a tough economy. Our primary responsibility is to ensure that we?re able to deliver stellar academic programs and keep students in school, which requires scholarship support for most of them. Regarding complacency, we have to work diligently to ensure that everyone understands why it?s so important to mobilize and be actively engaged, in both supporting and promoting sustainability.
JW: What would you like to accomplish next in terms of sustainability at Spelman?
BT: As it relates to environmental sustainability, the first major milestone is our Climate Action Plan, which I described earlier. Now that we have a plan, we need to follow it. As relates to personal sustainability, we are focused on the Wellness Revolution (which I also described earlier) and creating the physical space needed to fully implement the vision for the program. That involves the completion of Read Hall using LEED standards. We are actively engaged in raising funds for that project. Regarding communal sustainability, we will continue to educate the community about the importance of the 3 C?s at Spelman and what each of us can do to ensure the long term health of our institution.
JW: How do you spend your free time?
BT: I like to exercise, read, and focus on my personal sustainability. I also enjoy time alone and time with my family.

Flair and HBK on Triple H 'hanging up the boots'
He?s been a cornerstone of WWE for the better part of the last two decades, but on April 7 at WrestleMania, Triple H could be competing in a WWE ring for the very last time when he collides with Brock Lesnar in a barbaric No Holds Barred Match. Thanks to Paul Heyman?s sinister machinations, The Game must retire if he is unable to conquer the former WWE, NCAA and UFC Champion.
With Heyman revealing the stipulations of this bout only after Triple H had signed the contract on the March 18 edition of Raw (WATCH), the WWE COO was unaware that he was agreeing to terms that could prematurely end one of the most celebrated careers in WWE history. The revelation that Triple H?s final match could be fast approaching immediately sent shockwaves throughout the WWE Universe.
?He?s too young to leave the business and has too much left to offer,? two-time WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair told WWE.com. ?If he doesn?t wrestle again, no matter how much time he spends in the office working with the company, he?ll be miserable. He needs to be in the ring. That?s who he is.?
There are only a few who know Triple H quite as well as ?The Nature Boy,? who served as a mentor to The Cerebral Assassin as part of Evolution and continues to be The Game?s close confidant. In fact, it was Triple H who inducted the 16-time World Champion into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008 ? the night before Flair was retired at the hands of Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XXIV.
?[At WrestleMania XXIV], the cards were dealt,? Flair explained, thinking back on his own legacy as Triple H?s career hangs in the balance. ?I was nowhere near the level of ability as Shawn Michaels that night, and I don?t think anybody expected me to be. But I walked out of there a very proud man. It was sad to leave, but I was very proud.?
Just two years later, it was fellow WWE Hall of Famer HBK who would be facing similar circumstances on The Grandest Stage of Them All, battling The Undertaker in a ?Streak vs. Career? Match at WrestleMania XXVI. Like Flair before him, ?Mr. WrestleMania? took that long and final walk back to the locker room after falling to The Phenom.

Rex Ryan: Jets not actively dangling Revis

PHOENIX (AP) ? Rex Ryan is like every coach: He doesn't want to see his best player leave.
Yet even while Ryan was saying Tuesday that the New York Jets are not actively pursuing a trade of Darrelle Revis, he sounded prepared to enter the 2013 season without his star cornerback.
Ryan said it's not a foregone conclusion the Jets will deal Revis, who is unhappy with his contract and reportedly has been the subject of discussion with several teams, most recently Tampa Bay. But Ryan acknowledges any team will listen if another club calls about acquiring any player.
"''I'll coach who's here," Ryan said. "On opening day we'll see who that is."
Revis missed most of last season with a left knee injury, but when healthy is considered the best cornerback in the league. He earned a $1 million roster bonus on Saturday.
Ryan didn't say if he expects Revis to be a member of the Jets this season. Revis' contract will cost the Jets $6 million overall if he remains on the roster. In addition to the bonus he got last week, he has two more $1 million bonuses due before preseason begins. His base salary is $3 million.
"I always want all of our players on our team, and sometimes that happens and sometimes it doesn't," Ryan said. "It doesn't always happen, I've learned that. I always have a loyalty to our guys I've coached.
"When the first trade thing came up, I connected it to someone that clearly made it up; there was no factual basis. On the first day John Idzik is named general manager and he doesn't even know where his office is, we're trying to trade Darrelle?
"This is all speculation like it's a foregone conclusion. I don't believe it. With that, I am not naive enough to understand several people would be interest in a player like Darrelle Revis."
The Jets can't franchise the 27-year-old Revis next year because of a clause in the contract he renegotiated to get three years ago. He wants to be among the highest-paid players in the league and his current deal doesn't place him at the top for his position.
Revis has never said he wants to leave New York. And the Jets have found the market for him might not yield the kind of compensation package in draft picks ? including a first-rounder ? they feel he is worth.
